Reidar Wasenius

After being a board member in 2020, Reidar was invited to become the Chairman of the Economic Society of Finland in 2021. He will continue as chair throughout 2024, during which the society celebrates its 130 years of promoting "distinguished economic discourse in Swedish in Finland", e.g. by publishing the Journal of the Economic Society of Finland - the only economics journal in Swedish in the eurozone.

As a second-time board member (previously 2005-2009) in the Snellman family association in Finland, Reidar will in 2021-2022 mainly contribute to the increased utilisation of modern digital tools for communications - internally and externally.

Reidar is a descendant of Olof Jönsson Snellman via his mother, the artist and graphic designer Kaija Snellman, and thus a long-time member of Snellman family association in Finland.

Reidar was first a high-school student at Svenska normallyceum i Helsingfors ("Norsen") 1981-1987. After graduation, he worked full-time as the school's computer literacy teacher in the late 1980s. In the 1990s he was a frequent substitute teacher in mathematics, physics and chemistry. In the 2000s, Reidar spoke as an alumnus at a number of morning assemblies and organized a brain club at the school. Promoting and furthering the use of new blockchain technologies is about informing, edcuating and convincing people. Reidar was thus invited to become a board member at the very start. He brings his 30+ years of experience within the ICT sector in journalism, education and marketing communications. He brings to the board his knowhow accumulated at Tekes, Digital Equipment Corporation, Nokia Corporation and Samsung Electronics Corporation. Some time after participating in the excellent Founder Institute startup acceleration program himself, Reidar became a Director of the local FI Helsinki chapter and began to mentor other startup founders. He is now mentoring founders all over the world in the new global FI Food Ecosystem startup acceleration program - based in Helsinki.

The association Helsingin Uusyrityskeskus ry - Helsingfors Nyföretagarcentral rf is the association tied to the NewCo Helsinki service center. It provides services to entrepreneurs in Helsinki during the initial stages of their journey. The association also owns one third of the Maria 01 startup center.

In the very early days of Slush, Reidar helped the Founders of Slush to arrange the second, third and fourth Slush events in Helsinki. He was invited to speak and he also functioned as an MC and Moderator on stage and as a startup coach in sparring sessions. During late nights before and after the events, he helped Peter Vesterbacka, Timo Airisto and a handful of other idealistic organizers with event practicalities. Since 1911, SSI publishes Studentbladet - the oldest student paper in the Nordics. Its members are student associations at Swedish-speaking universities and polytechnics across Finland. As President of this student union, Reidar was responsible for the monthly operations of the union and heading the publishing business. Reidar was elected Chairman by his peers serving as Officer Candidates (officersaspiranter/upseerikokelaat) at the military unit Nylands Brigad / Uudenmaan Prikaati of the Finnish Defence Forces.

Reidar was elected by his peers to represent the artillery officer students in the student assembly of the Reserve Officer School (Reservofficersskolan/Reserviuspseerikoulu - RUK). He was also elected editor of the student body magazine Sohlo. In addition, he used his experience from radio broadcasting to function as the regular reader of announcements on the school intercom.

Reidar was elected Chairman by his peers at the school for non-commissioned officers (Underofficersskolan - UoSk / Aliupseerikoulu - AUK) at Nylands Brigad - NylBr / Uudenmaan Prikaati - UudPr. The task ended as he and the other top students moved on to train to become officers at the Reserve Office School (Reservofficersskolan / Reserviuspeerikoulu - RUK).

On his mother's (the artist and graphic designer Kaija Snellman) side, Reidar is a descendant of Olof Jönsson Snellman and thus a member of the large family association of Snellmans in Finland. During his five years as a Board Member 2005-2009, his main contributions were in the development of communication and the digitalization of administrative operations.

As the primus motor of The Circus, Reidar gathered the other children in the adjacent apartment buildings and organized a performance for all inhabitants of the buildings on Sjökortsgränden / Merikorttikuja 5-7 in the Helsinki suburb Nordsjö/Vuosaari. During the performance, he had the role of Ringmaster (Cirkusdirekör/Sirkustirehtööri).
