Who does not want "Pesticide and Fertiliser Free" food in their food plates?? Surely, everyone does..But are you hopeful?? The Announcement of "National Mission on Natural Farming" by Govt of India with a total outlay of Rs.2481 crore is a welcome step in this direction...However, some points to ponder about: 1. In a country, where the spread of diseases is wide-spread and the productivity per acre is already lower, will the farmers be open to experiment with Natural farming methods at scale? 2. Are the consumers willing to shell out extra in the name of the "Organically Produced"? 3. Will the fertilizer and Agrochemical Industry support this wholeheartedly or will resist its adoption? WayCool, a Chennai-based agritech startup, is transforming the way India produces, distributes and consumes agricultural products. Founded in 2015 by Karthik Jayaraman and Sanjay Dasari, WayCool aims to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers by leveraging cutting-edge technology. Starting as a small team of four, including a sales representative and a truck driver, WayCool faced numerous challenges typical for a budding startup. The founders had to navigate logistical hurdles, build relationships with farmers, and create a reliable supply chain. Despite these obstacles, the initial traction was promising, leading to a significant increase in customer engagement. By early 2017, the founders recognized the potential for greater scalability in the Business-to-Business (B2B) sector. This strategic pivot allowed WayCool to focus on supplying fresh produce to hotels, restaurants, and local retailers. The decision was not merely reactive; it was a calculated move based on market research and consumer behavior trends. WayCool Foods employs an omni-channel revenue model, which includes multiple categories such as food services, processing and bakeries, general trade, and modern trade. This multifaceted approach enables the startup to cater to a wide range of clients, from local kirana stores to national supermarket chains. One of WayCool’s primary missions is to combat food wastage, a pressing issue in the agricultural sector. By creating a direct link between farmers and consumers, the startup reduces the time fruits and vegetables spend in transit, ensuring fresher produce reaches the market. WayCool’s farmer engagement program, Outgrow, has worked with over 85,000 farmers. In the year ended March 2024, WayCool generated Rs 1,600 crore (US$192 million) in revenue. Nearly a third of that came from selling its own FMCG brands. According to news sources currently it has valuation of $700 million. Our latest project is a "scrollytelling" data story. We blend data, design, and code to convey the importance and impact of WWF-India’s project to solarize the dairy cold chain in India. Here are a few insights from our process: 📜 Scrollytelling: To explain WWF-India's initiative to use solar power in the dairy cold chain, we had to explain why it was so important to immediately chill raw milk, and how it travels from farms to a consumer’s fridge. With each scroll, a reader travels further down the milk supply chain — from cows and buffaloes to milk collection centres and bulk chilling units. The scrollytelling feature implemented by our skilled developers immerses readers in the process and explains it to them step-by-step — whether it is the problem, or the solution. 🧮 Proof and projections: What really drove this story home was the hard proof. The amount of electricity and money saved by transitioning to solar power was undeniable once we procured actual electricity bills from sites in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. In the design style created for this story, we showcased the bills from one of the sites pre and post-installation of the solar-powered milk chiller. Spent some time reading about Milky Mist yesterday. The milk industry in India is definitely brutal: 1/ Perishable product with just a 2-day shelf life 2/ Super low margins (3-5%) 3/ Inventory needs to move fast—for example, milk must be dispatched within 10 hours of milking to stay profitable How do you beat this? 🤔 Value addition is the answer. The more value we add, the higher the margins. See the #EBITDA margins for yourself: Milk = 3-5% Curd & paneer = ~20% Ghee = 22% Ice cream = >35% As we move from milk to paneer to ice cream, both margins and shelf lives increase. This is probably why we see milk brands shifting to products like paneer and ghee. Milky Mist is a prime example, and now I see Country Delight expanding into fruits & vegetables (F&V) too. 🚨 Key takeaway: In commoditized markets, price wars can kill margins. But with value addition, we can avoid price battles and boost profitability. The challenges don’t stop there—India’s milk source is highly fragmented, with 7.5 lakh dairy farmers owning an average of just 2 cows or buffaloes. Building farmer loyalty and ensuring milk consistency is a big hurdle. One potential solution is to engage with farmers from the start—understanding their challenges, helping them improve cattle health, and ultimately delivering more consistent, higher-quality milk. Creating a strong partnership ecosystem, like a #keiretsu model, could make a real difference here. Just a random thought ... India is stepping into another Green Revolution. High yielding cultivation with less resource utilization is the key. Crop Insurance is one of the key initiatives by Govt for protecting the crop and the farmers, where weather is uncertain. Crop insurance initiatives require farmers to self-register to the policy, which might go unnoticed due to the lack of awareness and may not target the impacted farmers. To ensure that only impacted farmers are benefited from these initiatives; satellite images, drone data and geospatial information of the weather impacted areas can be used to get predictive analytics using Artificial Intelligence #AI and Big Data #Bigdata for empowering the impacted farmers to auto-register for such policies. #Agritech #agriculture #startups

OCR* has been solved for western/Latin script for over 20 years, yet it is still too inaccurate to use for handwritten Devanagari script. This keeps in place a huge digital divide, disallowing Indian farmers the same benefits of western farmers like yield prediction, loan calculation etc. This is a huge problem!  So we’re launching a new Challenge with Heifer International: 🇮🇳 AI for Indian Farmers - Handwritten Devanagari ✍️ 🎯The goal: Develop Optical Character Recognition for handwritten Devanagari script to close the digital divide for Indian Farmers 💡 So why is this old Machine Learning problem still unsolved? While the Latin script has 26 letters and a total of ~70 different characters incl. numbers and punctuation, Devanagari has thousands of combinations due to the conjunction of consonants, diacritics and modifiers. As a cherry on the cake, letters are joined together in a word as well. Heifer Labs & Heifer India have provided us with big datasets from the handwritten financial records of farmers to start solving this problem.
