Nature’s quiet masterpiece: ‘Crown shyness’ is still a mystery to us. From above, it looks like a natural mosaic—a network of winding gaps that almost seem intentionally designed. But look closer, and you’ll find it’s the work of nature’s intelligence: “Crown shyness” occurs when certain tree species form intricate canopies and their crowns never touch. The result? A breathtakingly beautiful pattern of separation that as a whole forms a unity. Scientists theorize possible reasons: 🌳 Could it be to prevent overcrowding, ensuring every tree gets sunlight? 🌬️ Or to stop branches from clashing and breaking in the wind? 🦠 Perhaps it’s nature’s way of limiting the spread of diseases? We don’t know. Maybe one day we will. Until then it’s just a remarkable example of how nature finds balance. What’s your theory? 🤔

A few years ago I bought a plot of land in nature to preserve it. Forever. That’s when I started to learn about the challenges NbS carbon markets face and the 🤯 measurement costs and verification practices. That’s when I first met with Gabor Cselle and Diego Saez Gil , and got back in touch with Vasco van Roosmalen and Rebecca Moore , and Nicholas Clinton first showed me the work foresters do in the field. It became very clear that 🌎 can’t afford missing the forest for the trees anymore. With satellite data, AI, boots and phones on the ground, we can do much better! That’s also when I met with and counted with the contributions of David McClosky , Zoe Samuel , Alicia S. , Franco A. , Bryce Cronkite-Ratcliff , Jon Tippens and many others. The very high ambitions Michael C. Foroobar , David Kaul and I shared for media measurement and analytics started to translate to the natural ecosystem. When I met my co-founder Tessa Franzen it was a no brainer to go all-in. She’s an incredible thoughtful thinker who rolls up her sleeves. We built the alpha version of biodiversityX so users simply take pictures from any phone and we reproduced forestry science in the backend. Forest volume is calculated in seconds (and not months). Results look really good, DM to receive it :) It’s no code for forest measurement!! As my now friend Thomas W. Crowther often says “Only when nature is the economically viable option will restoration be truly sustainable.” Supply chains have veeeery scattered networks of farmers leaving ground data gaps. Governments need globally harmonized forest inventories. Carbon developers need a faster, cheaper, traceable method. We made decision-ready data available with real-time forest analytics so nature can be measured and become an ecomically viable option. 🌳
