This Movember, the NatureMetrics team have well and truly been on the move… A number of colleagues across NatureMetrics have been growing a ‘Mo’, moving 60km, or both, during November - all to represent the 60 men that are lost each hour globally to suicide, and to highlight mental health awareness across the business. We couldn’t be more proud of everyone at NatureMetrics HQ for their achievements so far, who’ve raised nearly £500, and moved over 500km this month for a cause close to all of our hearts. Having so many of the team involved has been amazing to see, with everyone rallying together to bring some levity during the darker winter months here in the UK. Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) have been responsible for 57% of extinctions globally - but with eDNA, we can turn this tide. Many organisations still rely on outdated monitoring methods, leaving them vulnerable to financial, environmental and reputational risks; costing the economy a staggering $423 billion annually. With eDNA, we can help tackle this challenge - here’s how: 🔍 1. Early Detection eDNA can detect species at extremely low densities, often before traditional methods can identify them. This early warning system allows for swift action, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of management. Early action = lower costs and better outcomes for ecosystems and businesses alike. 🌊 2. Comprehensive Coverage & Scalability With just one water sample, eDNA can screen for multiple species simultaneously, providing a fuller picture of biodiversity risks. It also scales easily, saving time and effort across large areas. More data, less effort = making eDNA an unparalleled tool for biodiversity monitoring. EDF discovered 70% more fish species using eDNA compared to traditional methods, while reducing vessel time by 40%. 💰 3. Cost-Effectiveness eDNA offers a scalable solution with significant cost savings over traditional methods like trapping or visual surveying. University of Sussex found eDNA detected species 8x faster than video surveys. Organisations using eDNA can allocate resources more effectively, turning monitoring into a proactive investment rather than a reactive expense. 🦺 4. Enhanced Safety Traditional monitoring methods can be time-consuming and hazardous, requiring nighttime work, diving, or handling wildlife. eDNA minimises these risks: Samples can be collected remotely or with drones, reducing human exposure to dangerous environments - it also eliminates direct interaction with wildlife, lowering the risk of bites, stings, and zoonotic diseases. Streamlining the process = eDNA improves safety while delivering superior results. We’ve already made 3272 detections of 109 different invasive species across 48 countries, contributing to global efforts to safeguard biodiversity and reduce business risks. Find out more about the impact we’ve had so far re: tackling INNS via: https://lnkd.in/ejN4SRDE 💡 Want to see how eDNA can transform your approach to biodiversity monitoring? When pioneers for nature and climate unite, everyone wins. At The Earthshot Prize Awards in Cape Town, we witnessed something truly remarkable. Being an Earthshot Prize Finalist has reinforced our mission at NatureMetrics → to leverage the power of high integrity data to drive action and financing on the ground - and that’s exactly how we will be supporting our fellow Finalists, and our worthy Winners, in their endeavours for nature: → Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (ATS) offers a simple, safe and reliable solution to transform industrial waste heat into electricity for use in hard to abate industries, with the potential to save gigatonnes of CO2. Their patented solution is also 98% circular, with components that can be reused, and cartridges that can be replaced as needed. → Keep IT Cool | Deliver while still fresh (KIC) provides sustainable refrigeration and smart distribution solutions for small farmers and fishers. It helps extend the shelf life of their produce, reduces spoilage, and creates more stable incomes. By improving profits and cutting down on food waste, KIC is helping build a more sustainable future for these communities. → High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (HAC) is turning words into action, engaging with governments around the world to officially protect 30% of our land and oceans by 2030. HAC is pushing governments to commit and act to protect 30% of the world’s land and oceans by 2030. Since its inception, HAC has rapidly expanded its mission, signing up 120 countries to the 30×30 target and doubling its signatories since 2021. → Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative has achieved an almost unprecedented feat: saving the critically endangered Saiga Antelope from extinction. This mission has grown into one of the world’s largest conservation projects – to protect and restore Kazakhstan’s Golden Steppe. The Saiga Antelope has recovered from “critically endangered” to “near threatened” status on the IUCN Red List. From a population of just 20,000 in 2003, the steppe is now home to 2.86 million Saiga. → Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO) drives behavioural change to help communities clean up waste, create jobs and build infrastructure to support circular waste management across Africa. Since 2019, they have created 70 green jobs for young people, widows, single mothers, and people with disabilities. As a result, more than 5,000 people have benefited directly or indirectly from the model. Being part of this inspirational network will help us to advance our technology, expand our network, and connect with conservationists on the ground, supporting their vital work out in the field. From here, we will continue to push forward together, tackling the task at hand with our shared knowledge. Imagine being able to survey an entire rainforest's biodiversity from just a few drops of water… 🧬 That's exactly what we've achieved using eDNA in our latest project with Conservation International and Legacy Landscapes Fund in Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains. We’re helping set new standards for biodiversity monitoring as we embark on a monitoring plan in this critically important ecosystem, home to a variety of endemic flora and fauna. Our kits couldn’t be simpler to use, enabling non-expert teams to collect data in remote areas - paving the way for more informed conservation strategies from the ground up. Our findings so far are incredibly exciting, and give promise for much more to come: 🗺️ 500+ species detected across 400,000 hectares 🐻 17 threatened IUCN Red List species identified including Asian black bears and Sunda pangolins 🦜 High bat and bird diversity complementing camera trap data 🔍 Uncovered previously unknown species populations to the area, reshaping our understanding of this vital ecosystem But this is just the beginning - and we're excited to see how this baseline data will shape long-term conservation efforts and investment decisions over the next 15 years in the Cardamom Mountains. ➡️By enabling comprehensive assessment of biodiversity outcomes, we’re helping to ensure every dollar spent drives maximum conservation impact. Here are the critical #COP16 take-homes that sustainability leaders need to know… 1. Moving Past Analysis Paralysis A key shift at COP16 was companies recognising that waiting for perfect metrics "analysis paralysis" creates dangerous delays. Business can't wait for government regulation - the business case demands urgent action now. Ground-truthed site data like eDNA and bioacoustics will maintain their value as frameworks evolve, while proxy datasets often lack the resolution to represent actual site conditions. The message was clear: start collecting real biodiversity data at the site level now, or risk falling far behind. 2. Indigenous Leadership is Redefining Conservation One of the most striking developments was the emergence of indigenous communities as drivers of biodiversity action, not just stakeholders. Their expertise in land stewardship and understanding of high-biodiversity areas is finally being recognised as crucial for achieving biodiversity targets and they will have a permanent seat at the table going forward. 3. Latin American Leadership in Action The tripling of corporate attendance (3,000 vs 1,000 in Montreal) wasn't just about numbers – it reflected Latin America's emergence as a driving force in biodiversity action. The region showcased their experience in restoration, biodiversity credits, and carbon projects, with a strong focus on inclusive approaches that prioritise local populations. 4. The Financing Model Needs an Overhaul A crucial realisation: traditional ROI models don't work for biodiversity. Biodiversity often sits too low on corporate budget priorities, with nature budgets often first to be cut during financial pressures. Some innovative approaches emerging include: - Linking commodity values to biodiversity risk - Integration of nature metrics into national accounts - New models for indigenous-led conservation financing - Redirect finance from nature-destructive to nature-positive activities - Integration of nature externalities into company financial accounts - New approaches to value chains and landscapes at scale 5. The Gap Between Leaders and Laggards is Widening as we Break the "Nature Hush" Companies like Anglo American American and Accenture demonstrated how sharing biodiversity data drives positive change beyond their operations with eDNA monitoring. While some organisations are still in the early stages of supply chain mapping, others including RWE, Nestlé, and ArcelorMittal have progressed to implementing comprehensive on-the-ground monitoring programs. Vale highlighted how eDNA has become key for freshwater habitats, complementing traditional assessments. This transparency revealed a significant implementation gap, with the leaders showing that waiting for perfect metrics isn't necessary – they're acting now. 21 forest sites, 659 soil samples - how we helped Forestry England create their biggest open source forestry data set yet… The team faced the seismic task of monitoring and managing biodiversity across 1,500 woods and forests covering over 250,000 hectares, with the aim of capturing the full spectrum of biodiversity and making data-driven conservation decisions. But traditional surveying methods just weren’t cutting it, particularly for hard-to-survey groups like fungi and soil invertebrates. More comprehensive data and biodiversity metrics were needed to tackle the task at hand. NatureMetrics designed and implemented a large-scale soil sampling strategy across 21 forest sites, encompassing areas where forest wilding, restoration, and new woodland creation will happen. In total, we analysed 659 soil samples using advanced eDNA metabarcoding techniques - the largest soil biodiversity dataset collected in England. The impact we achieved together was vast: → Over 5,000 unique species of fungi detected, more than ever recorded before → Comprehensive baseline established for tracking biodiversity changes over time → NatureMetrics Platform used to convert raw data into actionable biodiversity metrics → Four-year framework agreement to support long-term monitoring and insights → Integration of eDNA with other innovative technologies like bioacoustics Partnerships like these promise to yield valuable long-term data on the effectiveness of various forest management strategies, contributing to the understanding and preservation of woodland ecosystems across the UK. We are looking forward to collaborating with the Forestry England team more in the future!
