Climate-friendly homes & resilient livelihoods, for people and planet | 2024 Earthshot Prize Finalist 🌏
About us
Build up Nepal is an award-winning social enterprise that constructs climate-friendly homes and creates resilient livelihoods, to uplift marginalised communities and protect our planet. 🌏 Nepal is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. Many marginalised families dream of living in a safe, brick house, but cannot afford it. The fired brick industry is also a major polluter. 🏡 Our locally-led model supports micro-enterprises to produce climate-friendly bricks and build disaster-resilient homes that are greener, cheaper and safer. We have supported more than 300 micro-enterprises, built over 11,000 homes and created 1,600 jobs, while cutting 111,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the process. 📈 By 2030, we want to go further and scale to other disaster-prone countries, to make our dream of universal access to safe housing, and a world that's free of fired bricks, a reality. 💚

A safe home is a human right. In Nepal, 2.7 million people still live in inadequate shelter. This leaves them vulnerable to extreme weather and disasters. Build up Nepal is making a disaster-resilient home accessible for all, with our cheaper and greener eco-brick technology. Dashain Majhi (pictured below) and his family were living in a small shack. Then they moved into their new home, and well, the smiles say it all... 💚

Innovation that matters 🚀 Thank you for the feature Springwise: "As regions around the world experience more destructive natural disasters, it’s essential that we protect our built environment. But, this can’t come at the cost of longer-term climate protection." Our technology is a low-carbon and cost-effective alternative to coal-fired bricks, so we can keep people safe, and protect our planet. 💚 Have a look here ➡ https://lnkd.in/dWkXEEN3

These interlocking bricks are a game changer for people living in disaster-prone areas! Build up Nepal are revolutionising house building with this low-carbon and affordable alternative to clay fired bricks. They are compressed, instead of fired, which reduces CO2 emissions by 75% and air pollution by 90%. They customise the formula of the bricks, based on the location they are building in, to use local materials, and they contain just 6-7% cement. So far they’ve built 11,000 houses in Nepal (including 124 schools and public buildings) with a goal of building 1 million in the next 10 years! On top of this, more than 43,000 people have benefitted from new homes, with 2,232 jobs created by 307 entrepreneurs. We need ideas like this shared around the globe to protect communities, and create affordable housing! This week they also reached the final stages of The Earthshot Prize too for their amazing endeavours!

Our successful collaboration with the Business Partnerships Platform (BPP) has come to an end, and we'd like to take a moment to celebrate its achievements and thank those who made it possible. It is a testament to the power of shared vision and impactful collaboration. 💚 With support from BPP, Her Excellency Ms. Leann Johnston, Australian Ambassador, Kamakshi Yakthumba, Kavitha Kasyanathan, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Australian Embassy Kathmandu, Palladium: Make It Possible, and Engineers Without Borders Sweden / Ingenjörer utan gränser, we empowered more rural entrepreneurs to produce affordable, safe, and eco-friendly bricks. Their micro-enterprises created local jobs, built safe housing, and opened up new opportunities for low-income families, women, migrants, and youth in Nepal.🇳🇵 🌏 Together, we are building a more resilient, sustainable future, one eco-brick at a time.
