This challenges the previous misconception that biochar wasn't a permanent solution, which was based on studies of low-quality carbonized material rather than high-quality, industrially produced biochar. 🌡️ The report, authored by Harald Bier and Hansjörg Lerchenmüller, highlights that the treatment temperature of biomass is crucial. Incredibly powerful and detailed report by UN Environment Programme & International Resource Panel (IRP). My top take-aways: 1. Increasing resource use is the main driver of the triple planetary crisis: 🏭 Extraction and processing of material resources (fossil fuels, minerals, non-metallic minerals and biomass) account for over 55 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and 40 per cent of particulate matter health related impacts. 2. It is possible to reduce resource use while growing the economy, reducing inequality, improving well-being and dramatically reducing environmental impacts: 💹 Scenario modelling illustrates the potential to reduce and rebalance global per capita material use, with absolute reductions from around 2040 driven by reductions in high and upper middle-income nations that outweigh, in aggregate, increases in low and lower middle-income nations 3. Supply side measures are not adequate - demand side measures must be addressed: ⚖ Structurally lowering or avoiding resource-intensive demand in high consumption contexts is necessary. One of my favourite subjects as an undergraduate was #OrganicChemistry. It was a subject that was part of my everyday life. I loved all the reactions studied, the nucleophilic attacks, electrophilic attacks, esterifications, etc. I refer to this subject because one of these many processes, the transesterification reaction, is the basis for obtaining biofuels, specifically #biodiesel. Sustainable alternatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. This simple publication is to show how beautiful science is and how simple processes are today alternatives of sustainability and importance for the #preservationofourenvironment, maintaining the everyday life.

More investment is still urgently needed, however, to support fundamental #research or brilliant ideas to address the problem of #greenhousegases in our atmosphere will be missed. By 2050, an estimated 10Gt of CO2 per annum needs to be removed from the atmosphere to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement which aims to keep temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. In our Biosciences 10-year Strategic Plan (2024–2034), we declare our intention to develop renewable, sustainable, and accessible energy, chemicals, and materials through biology to enable decarbonization, a robust bioeconomy, and energy independence. We will do this by developing new, sustainable, and effective bioproducts, enabling optimized bioconversion of diverse feedstocks, and discovering fundamentals in photosynthesis and beyond. These activities will help reduce the effects of climate change, create biomanufacturing jobs, and accelerate the circular bioeconomy.
