Recent study by Embrapa Gado de Leite (Embrapa Milk Cattle) indicates that extreme heat causes significant losses in Brazilian dairy production. According to researcher Marcos Vinícius Barbosa da Silva, it is estimated that a cow can lose up to 15 kg of milk per lactation period due to heat stress, which represents a 25% reduction in production. During its metabolic process, the strain produces hydrogen sulfide, capable of preserving the quality of fruits and vegetables post-harvest and reducing losses due to spoilage. “We intend to extend the post-harvest period by up to seven days”, sayd Clara Núñez, quality analyst at Agro Frutillas San Pedro. 🌿 Investing in pasture recovery could make a huge contribution to improving the environmental performance of beef production in Mato Grosso, #Brazil's largest producing state. Around 18% (5.2 million hectares) of its pastures are severely or highly degraded, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere and contributing to #climatechange. 🐄 JBS, Marfrig and Minerva are the main traders sourcing #beef from regions in Mato Grosso with large concentrations of degraded pastures, while China, Egypt and the #EU are the main export destinations. By using their influence, these companies and their primary markets can drive #sustainable practices and technological advancements in pasture-recovery efforts. 📈 Our analysis shows where to start focusing efforts. Half of all degraded pastures are concentrated in fewer than 50 municipalities, predominantly in the south. Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, Porto Esperidião and Itiquira have a large amount of severely degraded pastures.
