#Brazil, among the world’s agricultural powerhouses as a producer of corn and soybeans, is looking to become self-sufficient in the production of #wheat within the next decade. In the early 2000s, Brazil’s wheat production was able to meet just over 30% of the national demand. However, by the 2022-23 harvest, this self-sufficiency rate had increased to 80%, a significant improvement. Isoldi, Agricultural Markets Analyst for King Korn In a report released on Nov. 14, the second of the Brazilian 24/25 season, the National Supply Company (CONAB, the agricultural Brazilian official agency) announced that Brazil is expected to harvest 166.14 million metric tons of soybeans (6.10 billion bushels). Interestingly, this figure is very close to the latest WASDE projection (Nov. 8), which indicated 169 mmt (6.21 billion bushels). Adding in Argentina’s 51 mmt (1.87 billion bu) and Paraguay’s 11.2 mmt (411.59 million bu), both projected by the USDA, South America’s total soybean production could reach a record 230 mmt (8.45 billion bu) — a true sea of soybeans. For Brazil, this estimate is also the largest ever, 6.7% above the previous record of 155.7 mmt (5.72 billion bu) in the 22/23 season. The government’s substantial $1.4 billion investment in enhancing non-traditional crop cultivation has led to a 10 per cent increase in ‘other crop’ production during the first half of 2024. Other crop production refers to the cultivation of crops that are not classified under the major or staple crop categories, such as rice, corn, or wheat. Through training programmes, infrastructural development, and seed and fertiliser distribution initiatives, the government was able to significantly increase production levels in comparison to last year. To lower the country’s food import bill, the government collaborated with the private sector to support the local production of produce that are normally imported.   This increased level of production had a significant impact on the country’s economic growth in non-oil sectors. A recent report from the Agricultural Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) highlighted the findings of a survey of New Zealand cereal growers, looking at the size of the 2024 harvest of wheat, barley and oats, divided into milling, malting or feed crops. The report also looked at sales channels, storage status, carry-over stocks from the 2023 harvest and sowing intentions for the autumn/winter campaign of 2024.
