The decision, recently posted on UNSW's website, is seen as a proactive measure in response to the Australian Government's plan to limit international enrollments starting in 2025, following proposed amendments to the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act, which governs the provision of #education to overseas students on #studentvisas in #Australia. Under the new policy, UNSW is restricted to enrolling 9,500 new #internationalstudents, a 14% reduction from 2023 & a significant decrease from this year's estimated intake of over 17,000 students. A university spokesperson informed The PIE News that, to prevent surpassing its enrollment cap, UNSW is introducing "a waitlist for 2025 international admissions with merit-based offers to be released progressively for programs where there is still availability." The spokesperson added that demand for UNSW has been "unprecedented" in recent years, driven by the university's program quality & growing reputation, & that without pre-emptive action, the university "could risk exceeding the proposed cap." It is not the first institution to take preventive measures ahead of the proposed international enrollment restrictions. ⏲️ Is New Zealand Ready? ⚔️ The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, along with tensions in the Middle East, has significantly impacted the global landscape. These developments may lead Europeans, Middle Easterners, and even Asian students who initially intended to study in Europe to consider more stable regions, such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, for their education or migration. Historically, periods of economic or political instability have often resulted in increased migration. If the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Middle Eastern tensions persist or escalate, the security, economic, and social challenges faced by Europe could drive more individuals to seek refuge in relatively safe countries. 🍄 For now, let’s set aside the potential changes in New Zealand's immigration and study policies, as well as the adequacy of housing and infrastructure to meet demand. The 2025 caps exclude higher degree by research students, students undertaking standalone English language courses, non-award students, Australian Government sponsored scholars, students that are part of an Australian transnational education arrangement or twinning arrangement, key partner foreign government scholarship holders, and students from the Pacific and Timor-Leste. That is higher education providers will be able to enrol above their caps in 2025 if they are enrolling students from these cohorts.

A Call to Unity Amidst Educational Policy Reforms Recent statistics from Australia present a stark reality check for the international education sector. As of March, student arrivals have plummeted to a 10-year low at 46,570, excluding the pandemic years, while departures surged to a five-year high at 39,860, reflecting a stark increase from 21,800 the previous year. These numbers reveal the tangible consequences of new visa regulations aimed at refining the education system and curbing malpractices within the $40 billion education export sector. The policies introduced by Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil, including the revocation of the COVID-19 visa that permitted 120,000 students to work full-time, have had a profound effect. The government's efforts to eliminate commission-based incentives for education agents and to heighten visa application scrutiny have contributed to this shift, affecting universities’ abilities to attract students from key markets such as India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, points out the political sensitivity surrounding migration and the disproportionate effect of the policy crackdown on international students. While these measures address the quantity of students, the educational community must now question whether this is at the expense of quality. The ripple effects of policy reform demand a collective response from all stakeholders. We must unite—educational institutions, policymakers, industry associations, and local communities—to advocate for balanced, fair, and progressive policies that support international education and uphold the sector's integrity. In 2023, the international education sector was valued at an impressive $47.8 billion, making it Australia’s fourth largest export and the largest services and non-resources export. This substantial revenue not only bolsters the economy but also supports numerous ancillary industries, including accommodation, retail, and hospitality, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of the country. 🌟 Exceptional Growth in Tasmanian Education Sector for Bangladeshi Students in 2024! 🌟 The latest report showcases significant growth in Bangladeshi student enrolments and commencements in Tasmania, particularly at the University of Tasmania. 📈 Year-to-Date (YTD) Enrolments for Bangladeshi Students: 2023 (All YTD): 2,307 students 2024 (All YTD): 3,606 students That’s a remarkable 56% increase in total enrolments! Notably, new enrolments alone grew from 1,083 in 2023 to 2,082 in 2024—a 92% surge. 🎓 Year-to-Date (YTD) Commencements for Bangladeshi Students: 2023 (All YTD): 1,191 students 2024 (All YTD): 2,246 students This represents an 89% growth in commencements overall. New commencements also nearly doubled, going from 1,083 in 2023 to 2,082 in 2024. 🔍 Comparison with Other States: NSW: New enrolments dropped from 17,558 to 14,507, and total commencements fell by 5%. VIC: Both new enrolments and commencements decreased significantly, with a 34% drop in new commencements. QLD, SA, WA, NT, and ACT: These states also experienced either declines or minimal growth in new enrolments and commencements. Highly stimulating session today with Unitec academic leaders, including many members of the #professoriate (yes, many vocational providers in #NZ have excellent professors), considering the risks and opportunities in the University Advisory Group’s terms of reference. Here’s an idea: perhaps the general theories developed through #universities’ basic research should be tested in applied settings by #vocational researchers? Of course, this might mean that the application of theory in practice may on occasion disprove the theory.

Australia’s Education Minister Jason Clare has announced a new National Planning Level (NPL) for 2025, setting a cap of 270,000 new international student enrollments. This adjustment from the 561,000 students in 2023 will see publicly funded universities continue to admit 145,000 students, while the vocational education and training (VET) sector will welcome 95,000, and other institutions will have a cap of 30,000. This change presents a unique opportunity for universities to focus on providing even more personalized and high-quality educational experiences. With fewer students, institutions can offer smaller class sizes and enhanced resources, creating a more tailored learning environment. As the competition for spots may intensify, students will benefit from more dedicated support and attention. In response to these developments, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Germany, France, Malta, Singapore, and Dubai are emerging as alternative destinations for international students.

Important update about teacher accreditation: Changes to professional development requirements for teachers We have been advised that from 16 August 2024, the professional development (PD) requirements for accredited teachers have changed to reduce unnecessary burden on teachers maintaining their professional knowledge and practice. According to the NSW Education Standards Authority, the changes recognise the professionalism of NSW teachers, who typically exceed the required 100 hours of PD across various activities. The new rules apply to all NSW teachers who hold Proficient, Highly Accomplished, or Lead Teacher accreditation and are actively maintaining it. These changes remove the Elective and Accredited Professional Development (PD) categories, giving NSW teachers greater flexibility in completing their required 100 hours of PD. Teachers will no longer need to: -Complete Accredited PD across the four mandatory priority areas -Write evaluations for any Accredited PD courses they complete -Align PD activities against the 37 Standard Descriptors, instead aligning them with one or more of the 7 Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
