Restrictive policy environments in key destination countries are cited as the main cause. According to a recent Regulatory and Market Update, IDP forecasts a substantial decline of 20-25 percent in the international education market over the next year.

In 2023, the international education sector was valued at an impressive $47.8 billion, making it Australia’s fourth largest export and the largest services and non-resources export. This substantial revenue not only bolsters the economy but also supports numerous ancillary industries, including accommodation, retail, and hospitality, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of the country. It was responsible for a 0.8 per cent increase in GDP, contributing more than half of the economic growth recorded. Brilliant article by Christopher Ziguras on the rationale behind the upcoming move to cap international student places in Australia. I have expressed my opinion several times on this topic so I won't repeat myself, though it is clear that international students have many other options if Australia closes its doors to them. My view is that should this legislation pass, it would have negative and long-lasting ramifications on us as an education destination. I highly recommend reading Andrew Norton's brilliant analysis of the first draft of the International Education and Skills Strategic Framework, released Saturday. It does NOT paint a pretty picture of where Australian International Education is heading and is highly critical of the upcoming cap on international student numbers. It's a piece worth reading, even if you only have five spare minutes today. If you don't, this is all you have to know: '...The caps will face all the problems I have identified with bureaucratic allocation of domestic student funding. Because numbers will be allocated between universities and courses according to a politician or bureaucrat’s view of where students should enrol, rather than where students want to enrol, actual enrolments are likely to be well below the capped level.' With dwindling domestic demand and several measures to dampen the international market, one has to question what the Govt is thinking, especially in the context of the majority of international students going home immediately after or a few years after graduating in Australia 🤔 🤔 🤔 These measures will have long-lasting and severe repercussions on Australia as an education destination and will hurt our economy to the tune of billions of dollars. I never expected this from a Labour Government. Ouch!

Internationalsization of Higher Education Part 1 In the current climate of international student cap in Australia, it's even more imperative to internationalise higher education successfully. I reflected upon my experience teaching a summer course for exchange students at the National University of Singapore and teaching an international class at the Master of Strategic Communication Management at International Programs, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. There are three key lessons I have learned. 1. Discussion-based & student-centered pedagogies foster intercultural friendships among students very well. 2. Site visits to local cultures make learning more fun. International students appreciate learning opportunities outside the classrooms. 3. Remember that international education does NOT have to be between EAST and WEST only. Let's celebrate diverse cultures in our teaching and learning at the university!

Highly stimulating session today with Unitec academic leaders, including many members of the #professoriate (yes, many vocational providers in #NZ have excellent professors), considering the risks and opportunities in the University Advisory Group’s terms of reference. Here’s an idea: perhaps the general theories developed through #universities’ basic research should be tested in applied settings by #vocational researchers? Of course, this might mean that the application of theory in practice may on occasion disprove the theory.

One of the advantages to working with international collaborators, is that you wake up in Australia and there has been a wonderful announcement in a different time zone! It seems that one of the top higher education journals @TeachinginHE has awarded the Editor's Choice Award for our recent article: The politics of student belonging: identity and purpose: The Committee commenting that our international study on student 'belonging' "offers a way to rethink a significant area of the literature on teaching in higher education" In this article we essentially argue that “the notion of belonging should be handled with criticality and care”. 08 May 2024 - It has not been updated to be implemented for all applications lodged from 10 May 2024 03 May 2024 - The decision it seems has been reversed (at least on website) but we must be prepared for more chaos to follow!! Is it fair? I am sure there are better ways to reduce International student numbers in Australia. DHA has very quietly increased the living cost twice in 6 months today. This brings to light the short sightedness of the decision makers adding to the confusion and uncertainty within the education sector. This is an increase of $8669 from 1 July 2023. -Does this mean our cost of living has increased by $5,205 in 6 months (from 1 Oct 2023 to 1 May 2024)? -Will the minimum wage increase by $4.16/hr to match this increase on International students? -Will TSMIT (Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold) be also increased to $87,856? If not, why not? Living costs 12-month living costs are for: students – AUD29,710 partners coming with you – AUD10,394 a child coming with you – AUD4,449. Annual income Alternatively, you can provide evidence that your parents or your partner had a personal annual income of at least AUD87,856 in the 12 months immediately before you apply. I am pleased to announce that our latest paper ‘Employable me: Australian higher education and the employability agenda’ has been published in the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management. I'm delighted to share our findings with you. Few issues have attracted as much policy interest in the tertiary sector as graduate employability which positions universities and their students as key players in the national economy. At the same time, the standard conception of graduate employability, as it has evolved from human capital theory and modified by neoliberal ideology, has met with significant critique. Through analysis, we investigated the strategic plans of Australia’s 42 operating universities, aiming to understand the extent to which employability was embedded and how it was characterised within these institutions. We provide empirical evidence of the way in which Australian universities universally and uniformly adopt a particular model of employability, simultaneously claiming its unique stance. We advocate for a more thoughtful and nuanced approach. I extend my thanks to my co-author for her invaluable contribution to this endeavour. Australia’s Education Minister Jason Clare has announced a new National Planning Level (NPL) for 2025, setting a cap of 270,000 new international student enrollments. This adjustment from the 561,000 students in 2023 will see publicly funded universities continue to admit 145,000 students, while the vocational education and training (VET) sector will welcome 95,000, and other institutions will have a cap of 30,000. This change presents a unique opportunity for universities to focus on providing even more personalized and high-quality educational experiences. With fewer students, institutions can offer smaller class sizes and enhanced resources, creating a more tailored learning environment. As the competition for spots may intensify, students will benefit from more dedicated support and attention. In response to these developments, New Zealand, Ireland, Italy, Germany, France, Malta, Singapore, and Dubai are emerging as alternative destinations for international students.

The Australian Government is implementing numerous strategies to decrease the arrival of non-genuine international students in Australia and eliminate low-quality private providers from the education sector. While these governmental efforts are praiseworthy, there's a notable absence of action regarding establishing minimum standards for Education Agents. Though this transitional phase may present challenges for reputable providers and agents in the short term, I am optimistic about the potential for long-term benefits.
