Principle Architect | Transformation Leader | Solving Complex IT Challenges | VMware VCDX #222

One of the most consistent challenges that I come across when talking with customers is how to modernise IT environments without disrupting what’s already working. Businesses are constantly navigating the fine line between innovation and continuity. This is especially true as organisations face growing pressures to optimise costs, scale their operations, and meet increasingly complex compliance requirements. This is where Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) stands out, and why I’m proud of the role End-2-End Enterprise Architecture plays in helping organisations leverage this powerful solution. OCVS allows businesses to extend or migrate their existing VMware workloads to Oracle Cloud seamlessly—without requiring costly retraining or rearchitecting. It empowers IT teams to modernise at their own pace while maintaining operational continuity. For me, it’s a perfect example of how technology can solve real-world challenges without adding unnecessary complexity. From my perspective, three aspects of OCVS stand out: Simplicity and Continuity: There’s no need to overhaul your environment—your VMware tools, policies, and processes remain intact, but now you have the scalability of Oracle Cloud behind you. Compliance and Security: With organisations under immense regulatory scrutiny, OCVS’s ability to deliver robust compliance and data sovereignty is invaluable. Cost-Efficiency: In an era of doing more with less, OCVS helps businesses achieve significant savings while driving operational agility. At End-2-End Enterprise Architecture, we’ve been working closely with organisations to harness these benefits. Whether it’s crafting tailored migration strategies, optimising cloud environments for maximum ROI, or ensuring compliance with complex regulations, we focus on solving real-world challenges. The pace of change in enterprise IT isn’t slowing down, and the need for adaptable solutions is greater than ever. OCVS provides businesses with the ability to modernise without compromise—something I see resonate deeply with the organisations we work with. If you’re exploring how to modernise your IT environment, I’d love to discuss how OCVS could fit into your strategy. Feel free to reach out, comment below, or connect directly—I’m always happy to share insights or help start the conversation.

🚀 Affordable, Efficient Performance with VergeOS 4.13 🚀 Greg Campbell, VergeIO’s CTO, and I just completed a demonstration showcasing the remarkable cost-efficiency and performance of VergeOS 4.13. Using an eight-node cluster built in our labs with $1,500 servers powered by consumer-class AMD Ryzen 9 7940HX CPUs, 96GB RAM, and 25Gbps Ethernet, we proved just how far you can push affordability without sacrificing performance. This video shows VergeOS delivering 1.5 million random read IOPS using 64K blocks at $12,000, equating to just < $0.01 per IOPS! Oh, and response times? Sub-millisecond. Testing with 64K blocks is critical because it better reflects the demands of real-world virtualized environments compared to traditional 4K block testing. Virtual machines, databases, and large-file applications often rely on larger block sizes, making these results far more meaningful for enterprise workloads. If you want to see the complete test, including the write performance results, send me a message! 📹 Check out the video and learn how VergeOS delivers enterprise-grade performance at a fraction of the cost. #HyperconvergedInfrastructure #VergeOS #Performance #Innovation #CostEfficiency #DataCenter #TechLeadership #ITSolutions

Principle Architect | Transformation Leader | Solving Complex IT Challenges | VMware VCDX #222

NHS England Chief Information Officer, John Quinn, recently delivered a bold yet essential message to NHS trusts: it’s time to leave behind local data centres and fully embrace the cloud. His address at the North Yorkshire and Humber Directors of Informatics Forum on 14 November 2024 highlighted a pivotal moment for the NHS's digital transformation journey. Quinn's call to action is clear: stop investing in local data centres and leverage cloud solutions offered by industry leaders like Oracle, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. These providers deliver unmatched scalability, security, and cost-efficiency. As Quinn aptly put it, “This is low-value, high-commodity stuff you shouldn’t do yourself.” What’s exciting is NHSE's proactive approach to simplifying this transition. Quinn emphasised the importance of aggregating demand across the NHS, enabling collective bargaining for national cloud computing deals. This move will eliminate fragmented, localised negotiations, ensuring better pricing and standardised solutions across the board. On 4 December 2024, NHSE, in partnership with TechUK, will launch the NHS Marketplace and Innovation Hub—a groundbreaking platform poised to transform collaboration and innovation. With a cloud-enabled infrastructure supported by Microsoft, this "app store" for the NHS will showcase reusable solutions, reduce duplication, and foster collaboration across trusts. Imagine a unified space where NHS organisations can share apps, developer toolkits, and digital workspaces—accelerating innovation while driving down costs. Oracle, as a trusted partner in healthcare, is uniquely positioned to support this shift. With decades of expertise in cloud infrastructure and healthcare solutions, Oracle can help the NHS optimise workloads, modernise systems, and ensure data integrity—all while meeting stringent regulatory requirements. At the heart of Quinn's message is a “one digital approach”, centred on patient needs. By standardising tools and leveraging cloud power, the NHS can achieve greater efficiency and focus on what matters most: patient care. With NHS Shared Business Services also securing a national framework for cloud services, the time to act is now. The NHS’s digital transformation journey is no longer an option—it’s a necessity.

Principle Architect | Transformation Leader | Solving Complex IT Challenges | VMware VCDX #222

The news that Broadcom is discontinuing the VMware Certified Design Expert (VCDX) program has stirred a lot of emotions for me. While I may have stepped away from the VMware community for a few years as my career took another path, the skills I gained during my VCDX journey have been a constant driver in every part of my professional life. Achieving VCDX wasn’t just a technical accomplishment; it was a transformative experience. The process of designing, refining, and defending a system taught me how to approach architecture holistically—balancing technical needs with operational realities, costs, and scalability. It instilled a mindset of critical thinking and design excellence that I carry into every project, no matter the platform or technology. Now that my role has brought me back into a more active relationship with Broadcom, VMware, and the VCDX community, I find myself valuing every second of that process even more. The confidence to articulate ideas, defend decisions, and collaborate effectively with diverse teams is something I directly attribute to my VCDX journey. The announcement of the program’s end is bittersweet. On one hand, it’s a reminder of the community and sense of accomplishment the VCDX represented. On the other, it underscores the lasting impact it has had—not just on me, but on so many others who took part. To those who made the VCDX possible, and to the community that grew around it, thank you. The lessons learned, friendships made, and opportunities opened will continue to shape the industry and the careers of those who were lucky enough to be part of this journey. The program may be coming to a close, but its legacy endures.
