While #cloudcomputing is a great and quick way to accelerate growth and testing, and expand resources and availability, it’s important it’s not be equated with traditional on-premise #virtualization that limits you to costly configurations that may or may not meet your ROI targets and may not even be used for a few years (plus the need for someone to manage them physically—which may be required for sensitive sectors like banks and ID providers etc..). Cloud computing infrastructure allows you to “flexibly optimize resources” enabling modern trends like #microservices, #serverless, and more active #security_monitoring and #event_logging. They even allow you to have your own physical servers dedicated just for you (like #IBM’s bare metal configuration for your #VPC). If done right, these resources provide huge cost-savings and are as secure as any on-premise server can get. However, it’s important we get the basics right so we don’t miss out on these potential benefits and to educate ourselves as much as we can. Also to hire people who know what they’re doing.. I had an IT guy telling me that their cloud VMs are very secure on the web, because they.. they are accessed via SSH 🤦🏽‍♂️😳 Well, you better enable SSH if you’re remotely accessing a VM! But that’s not what your website visitors use to access your website! SSL/TLS is used for “secure transfer of data between the browser and your website”. #SSH on the other hand is a “secure SHELL” which is what you use to LOG IN to a remote server/computer—typically via a #CLI. Clear, sir?

This is really some great work from Broadcom and Chris' team. As we rethink what constitutes an infrastructure service for an AI platform, there's some solid foundational work here. Creating a RAG process with validation is something I'd consider infrastructure. At the minimum, it's something a platform team should provide to AI developers. In a perfect world, there's an API for developers to point to an S3 bucket or flat file directory to ingest data to augment any model they may select from a marketplace. The vector database, embeddings, and validation should all be automated away. VMware isn't all the way there yet, but this is a great start, and the fact that the start is available via GitHub is a win for all of us on a learning journey.

When you partner with a hyperscaler, there is a challenging pattern ahead. I've seen this play out a few times. I'll use AWS as an example in this case. First, you launch a service/abstraction/enhancement to an AWS service offering. This is what we call the "selling pickaxes to coal miners". Think of an optimization offering on a database or container offering as examples. Second, you begin to partner successfully with the AWS field teams with enablement, account mapping, and increase deal flow. Third, AWS starts sharing potential deals with you because you have shown CUSTOMER VALUE. Remember that AWS is CUSTOMER-OBSESSED for a reason. Even if your service reduces their revenue potential in one instance, AWS understands the long-game. A happy AWS customer saving money will likely do more things . You're on the radar for two reasons: you are adding value to their customers, buuuuuuuuuuut...product managers are also keenly watching for opportunities for native features that emulate what you've done. Fourth, you get invited up to have speaking spot at an event and talk about your partnership and value. Then the hammer drop... Fifth, your hyperscaler announces "what you do"-as-a-Service. OUCH!! But this is the best possible market validation. Except, you now have a big competitor. How do you handle it? When you're finding alignment with the hyperscaler sales field, start building more capabilities. ASK the hyperscaler sellers what else those customers are struggling with. FIND your next features and capabilities in those conversations. Lather, rinse, repeat. Having a partner become a competitor is a bittersweet situation. But you have the power to see the potential before the risk is realized. Stay humble. Stay agile. Listen to customers. Delight customers.

We roll our own Solaris boot images to OCI, and manage software releases / upgrades using zfs send / zfs recv, all from behind a frontend TCP load balancer in a FIPS-2 compliant VPN environment. Benefits: Nobody has access to our host secrets, not even Oracle. No shared certs, no shared keys, no shared anything. The only way in is via an account compromise that leads to a ssh key compromise. You can't beat simplicity when it comes to security design!

Its foray into enterprise security is led by its vision to protect the world’s businesses across all assets and delivered on by the Microsoft Defender suite. Its dedication to innovation is demonstrated by the percentage of revenue it devotes to the R&D budget, which rivals the most innovative vendors in security. Microsoft demonstrates its innovation to its top enterprise clients and shows its commitment to accepting feedback through multiple channels. Microsoft has the most data-rich endpoint information in this evaluation. Reference customers cite unique features like a full timeline of activity that occurs on each endpoint as useful for investigation.
