This article highlights some very salient points that organizations should consider when thinking about modernizing their legacy technology systems. It's no surprise that legacy systems can increase costs and hamper agility for an organization.   The advice to break down modernization efforts into smaller chunks is good, as is the advice to ensure stakeholder alignment. However, what is missing is the need to perform a detailed analysis of how all these systems work together and interact/communicate with one another. The goal of this analysis would be to come up with an overall modernization strategy, the goals of which would align with the organization's mission and goals.   Without such a strategy, some modernization efforts and costs may be wasted. For example, some legacy systems might need to be left alone in the short term because of important connections with other systems. Other systems may be better off as candidates for decommissioning rather than upgrading. Indeed, the entire project overall must be a delicate dance of performing modernization efforts in a deliberate order, all while keeping downtime as limited as possible.   For an organization with many legacy systems, modernization can be dangerous because such organizations are more likely to have less of a handle on the interconnectedness of their systems, with outdated documentation and/or knowledge existing only in peoples' heads. Great to see the work here by Kenric Auguillard on tenant strategy. Looking at this from the point of the Program Manager for the Power CAT Tools team that managed CoE Kit we follow a similar model Dev, Test and Production deployment model to create and publish releases of the kit. The processed outlined in the whitepaper also help us focus on what items we can add from the CoE Kit backlog to aid the maker, admin and support persona to personalize the learning, return on investment tracking and environment request process across deployed environments.
