In my recent piece with Arab News , I argue that transition finance is a key driver of economic transformation, helping countries move from high-carbon economies to more sustainable ones. Capital markets now feature transition bonds and debt securities aimed at helping high-carbon industries adopt greener practices. These bonds allow investors to support sustainable transformation while earning returns. Policymakers and financial organizations are actively promoting transition finance through various policies and incentives. Key themes to know from COP29, and for the road to COP30 in Brazil next year: With more than 65,000 registered participants from nearly 200 countries, COP29 in Baku saw greater engagement than initially expected, making it the second-largest COP on record. A fragmented geopolitical landscape, the election of Donald Trump in the U.S., rising greenhouse gas emissions, and questions over the adequacy of the UNFCCC process itself made for a challenging backdrop. However, whilst the outcome on climate finance fell short of the sum global economists consider necessary, the new ‘floor’ Baku has established is not insignificant. Moreover, with Brazil’s comparatively greater diplomatic influence, the issues this gathering in Baku crystalized set the scene for a highly charged year of climate action in 2025. Delivering the opening keynote at today's Climate Finance Capacity Building Forum, Jamal Saleh delivered a compelling keynote on the UAE Banks Federation’s dedication to sustainable finance, focusing on their ambitious targets, regulatory challenges, and ecosystem development. Key points included: ➤ The UAE Banks Federation’s commitment to one trillion dirhams in sustainable financing by 2030, potentially reaching this goal ahead of schedule ➤ Challenges in defining sustainable finance and the need for standardized rules and frameworks to ensure clarity and consistency ➤ The creation of a performance dashboard to monitor banks’ progress in meeting sustainability targets, highlighting accountability and transparency ➤ Emphasising banks’ own internal ESG practices and their influence on customers and suppliers, underlining the sector’s pivotal role in driving sustainable behaviour throughout the value chain ➤ The importance of establishing new laws and amending existing regulations to incentivise sustainable finance, as well as supporting SMEs in adopting green initiatives Jamal’s insights underscored the critical need for the banking sector to lead by example, foster a robust sustainability ecosystem, and pave the way for enduring environmental and social benefits.

Through strategic partnerships between financial institutions, climate-tech pioneers, and sustainable infrastructure projects, we are creating an unparalleled environment for climate capital deployment. At #COP29, we reinforce our vision, channelling transformative investments into emerging markets, scale climate solutions globally, and cement the UAE's position as the world's premier hub for #SustainableFinance.

Climate Finance… and Where Do We Go from Here? An incredibly topical and important issue, and one that we debated at length at the recent COP28 summit in Dubai. It was a great pleasure to make a keynote presentation on this critical topic at the ESG Summit 2024, organised by Global Partners Investments (GPI) under the High Patronage of the Office of His Highness Sheikh Tahnoon bin Saeed bin Tahnoon al Nahyan. We took a deep dive into the sources of climate finance currently available from MDBs, governments, and private investors, as well as some of the challenges faced. The importance of loss and damage programmes and the ongoing tensions between developed and developing economies were also discussed. Underlying the whole conversation was the shocking fact that there is a yawning climate financing gap. The Paris Agreement's target is to keep global warming to no more than 1.5°C above preindustrial levels. The projected annual funding requirement to achieve this target is no less than $9 trillion per annum until 2030 and $10.8 trillion per annum until 2050. Global climate finance amounted to only $1.3 trillion in 2022, according to a report last year from the Climate Policy Initiative. What an (impossible) challenge to bridge this gap! To put the whole climate finance deficit further in context, we are currently spending $2.2 trillion per year on military expenditure and, staggeringly, no less than $6.6 trillion per year on fossil fuel subsidies, according to the same report. The situation is dire. The world is on the verge of a climate abyss, as stated in a recent UN report. Eighty percent of the world’s foremost climate experts expect a rise of between 2.5°C and 3.0°C above preindustrial levels by 2030 — a catastrophic level of heating, as reported in a recent Guardian survey. The battle to keep 1.5°C alive will be won or lost in the remaining years of this decade, under the watch or otherwise of our current political and industry leaders. #esg #climatechange #esginvesting #climatefinance
