All good recommendations from Martin Wolf, but lacking one key reform: teach people about finance. We continually see too many recommendations that suggest changes that assume either full financial literacy, classic "economic rationality" or the opposite, that there's no point educating people, just do stuff for them. With the two-pot pension system set to go live on the 1st of September, in my latest column for Business Day, I look its basic structure, functions and rational - in light of behavioural heuristics in the pension space. I further consider its impact from an economic, individual and investment strategy perspective. Over the past few years, DC pension schemes have made efforts to place sustainability at the heart of their investment strategies, particularly in regards to climate change. Sam Tripuraneni, head of sustainable investments at Aviva Investors, cites data from WWF that revealed the world has seen an average 68 per cent drop in mammal, bird, fish, reptile and amphibian populations since 1970. “If we continue on the current course which will be well in advance of the 2°C stated in the Paris Agreement, there will be a catastrophic scale of biodiversity loss by 2100 – which will have far reaching consequences for ecosystem stability on land and in oceans,” he says. Today on COP29 Finance Day, Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) shared its 2024 Progress Report, highlighting big strides in transition planning this past year. With over 700 financial institutions now part of the Net-Zero Alliances, more than two-thirds have set out plans for transition.   In 2024, GFANZ has seen continued growth through Regional Networks across Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, and celebrated new Chapters in Hong Kong and Brazil.   GFANZ has also acted as the finance partner to key global initiatives driving climate-related investment and has supported the launch of the Brazilian Nature Investment Lab, the Global Capacity Building Coalition (GCBC) and the expanded efforts of the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU).   Click through to the full report to dive into the year’s progress.
