SOUTH AFRICA’S VC SECTOR ON POSITIVE TRAJECTORY AND WHAT THIS MEANS South Africa’s 2023 startup ecosystem concluded on a high note, as the local venture capital (VC) sector defied the global downward trend in annual deals since 2020. The SAVCA Venture Capital Industry Survey 2024 recently revealed that total capital flow to startups exceeded R3 billion ($164 million) for the first time, demonstrating the sector’s remarkable resilience and potential. The survey, launched by SAVCA, highlighted the significant increase in capital flow, with R10.73 billion ($586 million) invested across 1,106 active deals since the survey’s inception in 2010. While the number of deals slightly decreased in 2023 (184 deals compared to 195 in 2022), the activity remained higher than pre-Covid levels. For the first time in the history of Southern African Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (SAVCA)’s VC Industry Survey, South African startups raised over R3 billion, more than doubling previous funding raised in a single year. Encouragingly, 2023 also saw a hike in corporates investing alongside early-stage fund managers. While deal volume has remained stable, investments are increasingly supporting portfolio companies with follow-on investments.
