Thr Effect of Rheum ribes Root (Rhubarb) on Menopausal Hot Flashes: A Randomized Double-Blind, Study-Iran University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Abstract Background and objectives: Hot flashes are one of the most predominant complaints of menopause among women. The main treatment is hormone replacement therapy, which has side effects. Therefore, the use of plants with phytoestrogen has been suggested as an adjunctive treatment. This study aimed to estimate the efficacy of processed rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) on hot flashes in postmenopausal women. Methods: This double-blind placebo-controlled trial was performed on postmenopausal women who were referred to public health centers at Iran University of Medical Sciences. Ninety postmenopausal women aged over 45 years with menopausal hot flashes were randomly assigned to two groups. The treatment group received 500 mg of encapsulated processed R. ribes twice a day for eight weeks, and the control group received placebo (starch powder) in the same manner. Data were collected using Blatt–Kupperman index at the start of the study, fourth and eighth weeks after the intervention. Descriptive and analytic statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 74 patients completed the study (39 participants in the intervention group and 35 in the control group). The results showed that R. ribes significantly decreased the mean of flashing in Blatt–Kupperman index four and eight weeks post-intervention (p<0.001). Rheum ribes showed no serious adverse effects. Conclusion: The findings of this study propose that treatment with R. ribes may be considered an adjunctive treatment for hot flashes in postmenopausal women.

Although I did share previously some news about this roundtable, I thought I'd share some views by sharing the post of my colleague. It was a pleasure to co-host this roundtable with Jennifer Burdman and Robert Alderson and, personally, I like the small group discussion that a roundtable enables. Then, the European Patent Package (UP&UPC) and licensing: UPCA actually affects several critical components of license agreements such as prosecution management, litigation management and co-ownership. This has not necessarily been highlighted enough and could cause surprises especially to exclusive licensors. Also, pay attention to sub-licensing.

On my way to judge a coffee competition, and I’m reminded of how vital community is in our industry. Competitions like these aren’t just about showcasing skills—they’re about bringing people together, sharing knowledge, and supporting each other’s growth. As someone who has competed, coached, judged, and trained judges, I’ve seen firsthand the impact of a strong, supportive community. The coffee community thrives on collaboration and mutual support. Events like this allow us to celebrate our craft, learn from one another, and push the boundaries of what we can achieve. It’s inspiring to see so many passionate individuals come together. Supporting these competitionsl is crucial, not just by joining to gain something, but by truly contributing to the industry. Year after year, we see people come and go, but those who understand the importance of giving back consistently put in the time and effort. So we finally have some regulation of the cask world! And it is from a REAL LIFE authority with teeth - the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). In short the ASA has issued an enforcement notice to whisky cask investment companies, demanding greater transparency in their advertising. This directive, effective from January 2, 2024, aims to ensure that consumers are not misled and are fully informed about the risks and details of such investments. The notice requires that advertisements must clearly disclose the risks involved in investing, including the potential for fluctuating values and the fact that returns are not guaranteed. It also mandates that ads must contain “material information” necessary for consumers to make informed decisions. This includes the unregulated status of whisky cask investments, the variability of investment values, and applicable fees and conditions. Where I think this gets very interesting is how this intersects with companies telling customers the actual nature of their ownership (i.e. securities rather than casks) as it could very easily be brought into this guidance. Hints and Tips... Who's judging a particular award can be a good way to ascertain just how prestigious and credible a particular award is. Questions you might like to ask yourself are; 1. Is the judge a previous winner and if so what experience and prejudices are they bringing to the judging table? 2. Is the judge also a sponsor of the awards they're judging? If so does this give them anymore say-so than any other judge? 3. Is the judge also entering the awards (either individually or via their business) and if so how is that being treated by the award organisers? What you're looking for is clear judging criteria and transparency thereby ensuring you know your nomination will get as fair an opportunity as anyone else around that table (virtual or otherwise). Don't be afraid to ask questions. Entering (and winning!) awards takes time. Make sure you invest it wisely gaining the maximum benefit for your efforts. Do you have a question for us?
