I once got a cold call from a Recruitment Agency in Cape Town asking if I was in the market for new opportunities. This was the only question that was asked and the only time I got to speak over the next ten minutes. The caller must've had a PHd in Yappanomics because she continued to tell me all about their fantastic culture, how they are changing the game blah blah blah. After she finished, she proceeded to tell me the salary range. The commission structure... and last but not least... THE DESK COST 😂 Not my proudest moment, but I couldn't help but laugh a little. I was just so taken back at the fact I didn't get a word in throughout the entire conversation. A conversation let alone an interview goes two ways. I could immediately gauge what type of environment I would be setting myself up for if I entertained the conversation any further. I felt like I was being spoken to off of a piece of paper with a script on it. Also... A desk cost?... Excuse my ignorance, maybe I'm speaking out of my means but I don't believe I know of another job that charges their employees for the infrastructure they use... Imagine a builder got charged on their salary because they were provided the bricks to build the house... This feels extremely outdated. To all my fellow recruiters, I'm curious... Have you ever experienced something like the above? If you are 9-5 on site Monday to Friday, you're running out of money by the end of the month AND YOU ARE BEING CHARGED A DESK COST - I want to hear from you. I want to hear about your position, what it consists of and how you're being remunerated and looked after. This is a safe space - let's connect and let's chat more about your situation 🤝

My golden recruitment rule No. 3 Referrals Referrals, referrals, referrals. referrals The number of times I've sat next to a recruiter who finished a call without asking for a referral (!!!) - even though it was on a plate Train, re-train, remind, praise, repeat NOT "Do you have any friends looking for work?" NOT "We have a referral scheme..." The successful recruiters mindset. There is a lot of talk about improving mindset in general and I am right behind all of this. My problem is that no one talks specifically about what is needed in terms of the recruiters mindset. We need to make a definition here as there are differences between what a recruiter needs against salespeople and business leaders in general. Time for me to go to work on this.
