PARTICLES OF MATTER

• Almost all materials around us exist in different states namely:

Solid, Liquid, and Gas.
• Sometimes we use different names for the same substance but in
different phase like water in liquid form, ice for solid and water
vapor in gaseous form.
• State is different from phase, State refers to the condition of a
particular compound in a physical system while Phase is a set of
states within such system that refers to the types of molecular
motion.
SOLID
• It has definite shape and definite
volume.
• It composed of particles which are
bonded together in permanent
positions by strong forces of attraction.
• If intense heat is applied to solids, the
molecules may be able to move out
from the strong forces holding them.

Ex. When butter melts.

LIQUID
• It composed of particles which are
held together by forces, which are
not that strong as compared to those
solids.
• Its particles are free to move.
GAS
• It do not have a definite shape
and volume, because their
particles are far from each other.
• The forces of attraction holding
them are not so strong that they
can easily break loose from the
force attracting them.
• They can move freely and
constantly in different directions.
PLASMA
• It is a gas at a very high
temperature and their particles
carry electric charges.
• It may form structures such as
filaments, beams and double
layers under the influence of
magnetic field.
BOSE- EINSTEIN
CONDENSATE (BEC)
• It is the fifth state of matter that
was predicted by Satyendra
Bose and Albert Einstein in the
1920’s but not observed until
1995.
• Cornell and Weiman created the
condensate at super low
temperatures.

PHYSICAL CHANGES
• A process that does not produce new product.
• Phase Change – it is a physical change where material changes
from solid to liquid (melting), liquid to gas (evaporation), solid to
gas (sublimation), and liquid to solid (solidification)

FREEZING CONDENSING
CHEMICAL CHANGES
• It is a process that produces a new substances.
• The identities and composition of the original substance is
changed.
