• HART protocol layers
• Theory of Operation
• Pros & Cons
• Conclusion
INTRODUCTION • HART is an open process control network that
supports HYBRID COMMUNICATION.
• According to Emerson, due to the huge
installation base of 4-20 mA systems throughout
the world, the HART Protocol is one of the most
popular industrial protocols today.
• HART protocol has made a good transition
protocol for users who wished to use the legacy
4–20 mA signals. but wanted to implement a
"smart" protocol.
INVENTION • The protocol was developed by Rosemount Inc.,
built off the Bell 202 early communications
standard in the mid-1980s as a proprietary digital
communication protocol for their smart field
instruments. Soon it evolved into HART and in
1986 it was made an open protocol.
• Since then, the capabilities of the protocol have
been enhanced by successive revisions to the
specification.
HART Communication Foundation

• It is manufacturer
independent, not for profit
organization encourages
widespread use of the HART
Technology.
• Over five million HART
field instruments installed in
over 1L plants worldwide
WHAT IS HART
• HART is Highway
Addressable Remote
Transducer Protocol
• It is the global standard for
sending and receiving digital
information across analog
wires between smart devices
and control of monitoring
system or handheld
communicators.
• HART is a bi-directional
communication protocol that
provides data access between
intelligent field instruments
and host systems
HART protocol layers
• HART follows the OSI
(Open Systems
Interconnections) model of
the ISO (International
Organization for
Standardization).
• The HART protocol uses a
reduced OSI model,
implementing only three
layers.
a. Physical layer
b. Link layer
c. Application layer
How HART Works

• HART” is an acronym for

Highway Addressable
Remote Transducer. The
HART Protocol makes use of
the Bell 202 Frequency Shift
Keying (FSK) standard to
superimpose digital
communication signals at a
low level on top of the 4-
20mA.
THEORY OF The basic principles behind the operation of HART
instruments and networks:
OPERATION Frequency Shift Keying
Communication Modes
HART Commands
HART Networks
Frequency Shift
• It is based on bell 202 telephone communication
Keying standard and operates using the FSK principle.
• The digital signal is made up of two frequencies
1,200 Hz and 2,200 Hz representing bits 1 and 0,
respectively.
• Sine waves of these two frequencies are
superimposed on the direct current analog signal
cables to provide simultaneous analog and digital
communications.
COMMUNICATION MODES
1.MASTER-SLAVE MODE
• During normal operation, each
slave (field device) communication
is initiated by a master
communication device(controller).
• HART provides for up to two
masters-primary and secondary
• The primary master is generally a
DCS,PLC or PC. The secondary
master can be a handheld terminal
or another PC
• Slave devices include transmitters,
actuators, and controllers that
respond to commands from
primary or secondary master
cont..

2. BURST MODE
• In burst mode, the master
instructs the slave device to
continuously broadcast a
standard HART reply message.
• The master receives the
message at the higher rate until
it instructs the slave to stop
bursting.
• Used for fast updating of the
values of a measured variable.
HART UNIVERSAL
Provides functions which are implemented in all field
COMMANDS devices.
COMMON PRACTICE
Provide functions to many field devices but not all. If a
device uses these functions, these commands should be used
to perform them.
DEVICE SPECIFICS
Provide functions which are more or less unique to
particular field device.
HART Network

• HART devices can operate in one

of two network configurations
point-to-point or multidrop.
1.POINT TO POINT MODE:
Both analog and digital
communications are supported.
4-20 mA signal is used to
communicate one process variable.
Additional process variable,
configuration parameters and other
device data are transferred digitally
using the HART.
CONT…

2.MULTIDROP MODE:
Only digital communication is
supported.
Requires only a single pair of wires.
Pros : Improved plant operations including cost
savings.
 Operational flexibility.
 Instrumentation investment protection.
Reduced maintenance cost.

Cons : Digital signal is slow.

Maximum of 16 HART device can be connected
on Multidrop loop.
Conclusion • HART provide digital communication to i
process plants. It continuously validates the
integrity of control information.
• It improves plant conditions and product quality
ensuring accuracy of system data and detect any
deviation between device and system.
