NETWORK ANALYSIS

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of bar charts?

2. The activity breakdown for a certain project is as under.
Activity A B C D E F G
Duration (weeks) 1 2 4 3 1 2 4
Activity B and activity C can be done concurrently, and both must follow activity A. Activity
B must precede activity D. Activity E cannot begin until both activities B and C are
completed. Activity F can be started only after activities D and E are complete. Activity G
is the last activity which can be started only after completion of activity E. Prepare the bar
chart and determine the total time of completion of the project. [Use graph paper]
3. What is a milestone chart? How does it differ from a bar chart?
4. Differentiate between the following techniques with suitable examples:
a. PERT and CPM.
b. CPM and PND.
5. Contrast between an event and an activity.
6. State True or False and give your comments on the following:
a. A project cannot have more than one critical path.
b. A critical path of a project network represents minimum time required to complete
the project.
c. An activity with some free float cannot be a critical activity.
d. The latest finish time of an activity is equal to the lowest of the latest start times of
the successor activities.
7. For the partial network given below eliminate dummy activity B1 maintaining the same
logical sequence. State by which rule it is eliminated?

8. Draw a network (AOA as well as AON) consisting of six activities given below.
Interrelationships among various activities are:
i. Activity A is the starting activity and precedes activities B and C.
ii. Activity D depends on activity B.

iii. Activity E follows activity C.

iv. Activity F is the last activity and it can start only when activity D and E are completed.
9. A project has fourteen activities A through N. The relationships which obtain amongst these
activities and their duration are given below:
i. A is the first operation.
ii. B and C can be performed in parallel and are immediate successor to A.
iii. D, E and F follow B.
iv. G follows E.
v. H follows D, but it cannot start until E is complete.
vi. I and J succeed G.
vii. F and J precede K.
viii. H and I precede L.
ix. M succeeds L and K.
x. The last operation N succeeds M and C.
Activity A B C D E F G H I J K L M N
Duration 10 12 8 6 12 5 4 8 10 6 12 2 7 9
Perform the following tasks:
a. Draw the network and number the events.
b. Calculate the earliest and latest start and finish time for each activity.
c. Compute the critical path and the duration of the project.
d. Determine all types of floats for each activity.
10. The data for the project is given in the table. Prepare the network diagram with the
estimated duration of various activities.
Activity Duration Predecessor
A 4 -
B 6 -
C 5 -
D 2 A, B
E 4 C, D
F 2 D
G 5 D
H 6 D, E, G
I 8 D
J 5 G
Determine the following:

a. Earliest start and finish times and latest start and finish times for all activities.
b. Total float, free float, independent float, and interfering float for each activity.
c. The critical path for the project and show it on the network.
11. For the project data given in the following table, draw an AOA network diagram and
determine the following:
Activity Duration (days) Succeeding Activity
A 3 D, E
B 2 F, I
C 3 G
D 1 H
E 2 I
F 4 K
G 4 K
H 5 J
I 2 K
J 3 -
K 1 L
L 4 -
i. Earliest and latest start and finish time for each activity.
ii. Critical path for the project and project duration.
iii. All types of floats for each activity.
12. The network for the project is shown. Calculate the expected time for each path. Which
path is critical? Draw the network showing expected time.

13. Draw the network diagram for the project with the following data. The time estimates (in
weeks) are given below.
Activity Optimistic Time Most Likely Time Pessimistic Time
1-2 1 5 9
1-3 5 6 7
1-4 3 5 7
2-6 2 4 6
3-5 1 3 5
4-5 2 3 4
5-6 4 6 8
5-7 6 8 10
6-7 1 4 7
6-8 3 7 11
7-8 2 5 8
8-9 1 2 3
i. Determine the critical path.
ii. What is the probability of completing the project within 20 weeks?
iii. Compute the expected completion time for the project with a 75% probability.
iv. What is the probability of completing the project within 30 weeks?
14. A small project consists of seven activities. The time estimates are given below:
Activity 1-2 1-3 1-4 2-5 3-5 4-6 5-6
Optimistic Time 1 1 2 1 2 2 3
Most Likely Time 1 4 2 1 5 5 6
Pessimistic Time 7 7 8 1 14 8 15
i. Draw the network.
ii. Determine the critical path.
iii. What is the probability of completing the project within 18 weeks?
15. The activity of plastering of a room takes its longest time to get completed. Considering
the delay in completion the contractor immediately takes up the next activity of laying
down the tiles. Explain with a suitable diagram the excess time available to the contractor
between the two activities.
