6 Description PCW Software Specification

2 Description
PCW Software Specification can be used to operate scales with controller types
MEAF-DUMP (acceptance scales and loading balances)
MEAF-DCOS (silo loading balance) or
MEAF-DMST (weighbridge).
The PCW program is capable of controlling up to 10 scales.

The main tasks are:

• Monitoring weighing
• Creating statistics (recording job reports).
• The program is designed as a single device which can also operate as a host
(data exchange) via an ethernet link.

2.1 System design

MEAF- y Control and monitoring of max. 10 scales

2.2 Data exchange with local control units

Data is exchanged with local control units (LCUs) via a serial interface. The inter-
face connection to the LCUs can be freely configured via the COM1 to COM6 RS-
232C interfaces available in the PC.
One external RS-232C/RS-485 interface converter is included in the scope of de-
livery.

PCW Software Specification Installation 7

3 Installation
3.1 Requirements for the installation location
PC: The PC should be placed in a control room.
Electronic control units: Ambient temperature: -10 to +50 °C
Position the devices so that the electronics are not exposed to direct sunlight. The
following general rule applies to electronic devices: long-term, high ambient tem-
peratures (higher than 30 °C) reduce the service life.

3.2 Minimum PC and printer requirements

• Pentium processor PC with 2.0 GHz clock rate, or higher
• Monitor with graphics resolution of at least 1280 x 1024 pixels
• Graphics card with graphics resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and 32k colours
(16-bit colour)
• At least 512 MB of main memory (RAM)
• At least 1.0 GB hard disk space
(A second storage medium is recommended for a database backup for in-
creased data security)
• CD-ROM drive
• Serial interface RS232 (COM1)
• Mouse (with separate connection)
• Parallel or USB interface for printer connection.
• Printer with corresponding printer driver (colour printer optional)

3.3 Windows configuration

3.3.1 FIFO parameter on COM interfaces
For the signal conversion from RS-232C to RS-485 by the interface converter to
function correctly, the FIFO parameter must be switched off (no tick present):

tem
Windows 2000 © “Start – Settings – Printers – Add printer”
Windows XP © “Start – Printers and Faxes – Add a printer”
Make sure that the printer is properly installed by printing a test page.
3.3.3 Communication program
No additional programs should be installed on Windows © which access the same
serial interfaces as the MEAF-PCW. Therefore, no fax, e-mail or Internet programs,
for example, should access COM1 when the MEAF-PCW COM1 is being used,
since that would interfere with communication via the serial interface.
3.3.4 Logging on in Windows
The Windows 2000 © logon and the Windows XP © ‘Welcome’ page are deacti-
vated when the program is installed so that when Windows © is started, the MEAF-
PCW starts up automatically.

5.5 Alarms and troubleshooting

If a fault occurs, an alarm message appears on the screen in cleartext in the alarm
line. In addition, the error message is saved. You can view a list of the most recent
alarm messages by clicking the alarm button.
5.5.1 Serial interface transmission errors

Message:

12.12.2003 07:56:35 There is a fault at port COM1.

Instead of COM1, COM2 to COM6 can also appear.

The data communication between MEAF-PCW and all subscribers (scales or I/O
modules) using a shared interface (port) is faulty or disconnected.
Causes: − Disconnected data cable (loose plug, etc.).
− Power failure of scales or I/O modules.
− Interface converter defective or no line voltage.
Remedy: − Check the wiring.
− Check the supply voltages of the scales and I/O modules.
− Remove each individual node from the data bus in succession
until the error message no longer appears.
− Check the interface converter (flashing of the LEDs).
For testing the serial communication, Communication tester, Communication log-
ger and Scale types are available in the Service menu or the SMServer program.
In addition, MEAF PCW is also supplied with the TELIWMFC test program which
can be used to test communications to the local control units. It is located in the
SERVICE\TELIWIN folder.
Caution: TELIWMFC should only be started when MEAF-PCW is switched off.
5.5.2 Scale faults

Message:

12.12.2003 07:56:07 scale 1: Scale open

Instead of scale 1, the name of any configured scale may also appear.
Instead of scale open, any of the other alarm messages created by one of the
LCUs may also appear. If the message
transmission fault appears, data communication between MEAF-PCW and one of
the LCUs is faulty or disconnected.
The alarm numbers match with the appropriate alarm indicator on the LCU. For
causes and remedies, refer to the operating instructions of the corresponding sca-
le.

5.5.3 Printer faults

If no printout takes place even if the printer is switched on, check the following:
Causes: − Is there paper in the printer?
− Is the printer set to “Online”?
− Is the connection to the printer OK?
If all the points mentioned above are in order and there is still no printout, a check
must be made to see whether the printer is defined as a standard printer in Win-
dows ©.
5.5.4 Database fault
If the database is not functioning, the MEAF-PCW program does not start up cor-
rectly. Symptoms of this error include:
Empty fields, tables, etc. in various screens of the user interface.

6.1 Data backup
General

To achieve maximum data security, the database must be backed up on a sepa-

rate data storage medium. If only one hard disk is available, the database backup
should be saved in its own folder.

Backing up data (database backup onto hard disk)

We recommend periodically making a backup of the database. MEAF-PCW auto-

matically performs a database backup based on the interval set in the backup con-
figuration. The backed up database MEAFPCWDB.DB is sent to the folder which
was set in Backup configuration and can be copied onto other data storage media.
In addition, a manual backup can also be carried out, saving the data in the folder
which was nominated in Backup configuration (for this, see section 5.3.4).
