century, the PTV enjoyed a monopoly in the broadcasting industry until the early 2000s and was
one of the two major television networks in the country. The end of PTV’s monopoly in 2000 led

8. over View of the Organization
Television in Pakistan started in 1964 and the first live transmission of Pakistan Television began
on November 26, 1964, in Lahore.
9. Brief history
Originally a private sector project in 1961 by prominent industrialist Syed Wajjid Ali who signed
a joint venture agreement with Nipon Electric Company (NEC), leading Pakistani engineer
Ubaidur Rahman was appointed by Wajjid Ali to head the television project. By 1962, after a
series of pilot transmission tests, the project was quickly taken over by the Ayub Khan
Government in 1963 for the “greater national interest of Pakistan”. President Ayub Khan re-
appointed Ubaidur Rahman in 1963 under the Ministry of Information to continue with the NEC
joint venture collaboration to launch Pakistan Television or PTV. The project began with a tent
on the back lot of Radio Pakistan Lahore where a transmission tower and a studio were
constructed. On November 26, 1964 the first official television station commenced transmission
broadcasts from Lahore,[1] followed by Dhaka in 1965 (then the capital of East Pakistan). A
third centre was established in Rawalpindi-Islamabad in 1965 and the fourth in Karachi in 1966.
Later centres in Peshawar and Quetta were established by 1974. PTV was given under Television
Promoters Company in 1966 which was established under Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting in the same year. TPC was upgraded to Pakistan Television Corp in 1967. In 1972
PTV Corporation was nationalized. Originally broadcast in black and white, PTV began colour
transmission in 1976.[2] With this new upgrade in techniques and equipment, the Pakistan
Television Academy was founded and opened in 1987 to teach students who wished to work in
the medium. As with the other agreement, the government financed most of the funds while the
private venture capitalists offered to fund the remainder. Late 1980s morning transmission
started on PTV.
In 1990, the then government launched the first semi government TV network of the country by
the name of “Peoples Television Network (PTN)under the Peoples TV Network, a wholly owned
company of Shalimar Recording Company (which is Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting
Company now). PTN, the wholly owned company was merged with Shalimar Recording
Company in 1991 and the TV Channel PTN was renamed as Shalimar Television Network
(STN). PTN/STN started from Islamabad first and then from Karachi, Lahore and by mid-1990s
the network made its way to the whole of the country. STN for the first time in Pakistan started
the programmings of CNN International on the terrestrial beam, this was the first project of STN.
Soon programs of BBC World started. In 1990, PTN under an agreement with the a private
company (Inter-flow) started first ever private TV slot of Pakistan, Network Television
Marketing (NTM), in this way STN’s broadcast became the combination of programings of
CNN, slot of NTM and limited broadcasts of programmings of BBC World and German DW
TV. This successfully continued till 1999. NTM came as a breathe of fresh air to the Pakistani
viewers due to its fresh and innovative programmings.
PTV Network launched a full-scale satellite broadcasting service in 1991-1992. PTV-2, the first
ever satellite channel of Pakistan started in 1992. In 1994, PTV was made part of the satellite
beam along with PTV-2. PTV 2 was renamed as PTV World in 1998. PTV-2/World also enjoyed
viewership on terrestrial beam. In 1998 PTV in association with a private company (Prime
Entertainment Network) started PTV Prime, exclusively for European and later for American
viewers. Digital TV satellite broadcasting was launched in 1999. PTV/PTV-1 got its satellite
beam (independent of PTV 2/World)in 2001.
NTM went off air in 1999 due to financial losses and with that STN also shut down CNN Intn’l
broadcast, limited programmings BBC World and DW TV in 1999. STN was taken over by PTV
Network in 1999 and was given new name Channel-3 which started its transmissions on regular
basis in 2000. A satellite beam of STN/Channel-3 was also arranged.
In 2000, the then government of Pakistan opened up new ways for the media industry of Pakistan
by allowing private TV channels to operate openly even to telecast their own news and current
affairs content. Indus Vision (first ever private satellite channel of Pakistan) was launched in
2000. ARY Digital was launched in 2001, Geo TV in 2002, Aaj TV in 2004 and Hum TV was
launched in 2005, and the phenomenon went on.
In 2005 Channel-3 went off air and with that Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Company
renamed its TV channel to ATV (a joint venture of Shalimar Rec. & Broadcast. Co. & SSI) and
ATV started its transmission as the only semi-private TV channel of Pakistan being shown on
terrestrial as well as satellite beam (Now ATV is working as semi-government TV Channel as
SRBC has not extended its agreement with SSI). In 2007, PTV or PTV-1 was given a new name
PTV Home and PTV World went off air (PTV World restarted in 2012-13 as the only English
language/pure satellite channel of Pakistan). PTV News replaced PTV World in 2007. PTV
Home, PTV News (both state owned) and ATV (semi private) channels are shown on terrestrial
beams along with the satellite beam. While recently started PTV Sports becomes available on
terrestrial beams in place of either PTV Home or PTV News only during the important national
and international sports events. PTV Prime went out of PTV’s purview in 2005 as an
independent Prime TV ; PTV launched an exclusive channel for Americas & Europe in 2006 i.e.
PTV Global.
.
A day before the inauguration of the Lahore Pilot Station, the Federal Secretary of Information
explained the main aims and objectives of television in Pakistan. According to him, television
was meant to help solve educational and social problems, and weld the people into a strong
unified and enlightened nation inspired by a common outlook on life. He made it clear that TV
would not be used for political purposes or air political programmers. The secretary further said
television would promote moral values, civic consciousness, pride and faith in the nation, and an
appreciation of cultural heritage. In due course, when more television stations are established, the
range of the new medium would cover an wide field enabling more and more people to benefit
from its educational and instructional potentialities.[2] Objectives The formal code of television
policy was outlined as:
PTV News channel is facing tough competition with other channel, Because Now it’s a time
when new channel is coming and they are investing much more money in this business. One
name of that kind of channel is BOL TV. BOL TV was in some scandal because of its parent
company name AXACT. Now BOL TV is back again and currently testing its transmission. BOL
TV is mostly hiring staff from other competitors by offering more salary.
The Competitors of ptv news is:
1. Geo News
2. BOL TV
3. Samma News
4. Dunya News
5. Waqt News
6. ARY News
7. Dawn News
Many other competitors is also available like Waseeb News, News One, AAJ News, ATV, Metro
Live Etc. Currently More news channel have recently come Like 7 News, 92 News and 24 News
HD. The more channels is launching and more tough competition have been started.
9. Organizational Structure
1.
1. Number of Employees
PTV News channel have total number of employees from 1500 to 1800, there is no correct
figure. In every city of Pakistan, there is 3,4 Reporter is available. There is different types of
reporters such as Crime reports and Beats reporter etc.
1. Main offices
PTV News Channel has total 10 offices in Pakistan included head office. Offices of ptv news
available only in big cities, Every office contain D S N G vain and technical staff.
10 offices in Pakistan is not mean that they are covering only 10 cities, they have reports in
Every district and Tehsil also.
This branch is very important because it cover many cities included DG khan, Muzafargarh,
Makhdoom Rasheed, Khanewal, Sahiwal and all nearby cities. The office have two portion one
is for TV channel and other is for Newspaper production.
The Head or bureau chief of PTV News is Shakeel anjum, he is also president of Press Club
Multan. He is senior reporter working in PTV.
1. Internship Period
Many times I write email to PTV News and call them, but Finally I got response from channel, I
request my university to give me reference letter, Thanks to the university and Mass
communication department who send me letter almost instantly.
Next day I go to the PTV office and submitted my reference letter, they send my request to head
office Lahore and finally they approve my request that I can start my internship. From 16 April
2019 I started my internship program; I really learn practical experience and many thing in the
internship program.
I did internship that cover many departments, I worked as a reporter and I cover many events, I
love to work as a reporter. I also spend my time in Current affairs section, I spend my most time
with sub editor, because he was the man who write the final script of package as well as he write
the ticker for channel also.
Other days I spent with contributors, distributors, press confreres, ticker management, event
handler, Producer, Hr department etc.
10. Training Program
Activities performed by the Department
Every department in TV channel is important, when we listen 1 minute headline, it contain
efforts of all department and team to collect news and make it live.
Because words cannot tell too much about something. Real practical is much different. I started
my internship with much confidence but I feel a lot of difficulties, the first difficulty of my
internship was my Urdu, all our mass communication course is in English and approximately all
our newspaper and news channel are in Urdu, so in news writing we need much power on Urdu,
we should expert in Urdu to write column in newspaper.
SWOT Analysis
SWOT Analysis is the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The strength of PTV is its
nationwide coverage unlike any other channel. Its weakness is the business of government
induced programs and low quality. The opportunities are to expand globally, and add quality
programs with slight change in culture. The threats are all the other quality cable operators which
have taken the market share.
15. Conclusion
There is no special conclusion on the basis of strength, weakness, threat and opportunity, if
company is making profit from on channel, they should not collect all profit in pocket, they have
to share profit with organization to make bigger organization. There is a lot of employees
working Ptv news channel which came’s from other media channel, like abbtakk news, waseeb
tv channel, Samaa News and Dunya news channel, and there are only few who left, because PTV
group is big channel and they have very friendly relation with their employees.
There is problem because who come in ptv news from other media group cannot adjust him with
old equipment. But a lot of improvement is needed which I all add in recommendation section.
They have to upgrade equipment and other staff to maintain the quality of news channel that if
other people from other media group come did not feel uncomfortable.
Ptv news should also share some benefits to their staff, salary is not enough, if company did a
good business he has to motivate staff to work more.
17. Recommendation
Every group have some strength and weak news, but overall PYVnews channel is powerful
source of news, but ptv news group have to think that only profit making is not important if one
group is earning profit from TV channel and government Tgeyhave to be invest, they to upgrade
their accessories.
