Scientific Technical Report

- is a document that describes the process, progress, or

results of technical or scientific research or the state of a technical
or scientific research problem. It might also include
recommendations and conclusion of the research.

Uses or Importance of Scientific

Technical Report
The main purpose of technical writing is to provide sometimes
complex information. This is the type of writing that will:
 Assist a person with understanding more about a particular
item, such as a computer or a new drug or a new piece of
technology.
 Explain how an object works or how to complete a project.
Technical writing is a very useful form of writing that is
encountered by everyone almost every day.

How does it differ from other

Academic Paper?
A technical paper is document which explains the process or
progress of technical research or the state of a technical or
scientific research matter where as academic paper is a
substantial piece of academic article or writing that usually
requires a class where the author does independent research for
a specific and write a deeply findings of the matter.

Structure of Scientific Technical

Report
1.Title Page
- is the first page of the report proper which the reader will
see.It should contain:
 The title and author’s name.
 The report reference number and date.
 The name of company and logo if desired.
 A statement of copyright,

2. Abstract
-is the most important part of a technical paper, and perhaps
one of the most misunderstood parts.

3.Introduction
-discusses the background of the subject matter you are
writing about.

5.Methods .
-give enough information on how you conducted your
work so that someone in your field could repeat what you have
done.

6.Results
-summarizes what happened in your experiments.

7.Discussion of Results or Conclusions

-discuss the meaning of your result.Demonstrate how well you
understand what you have done.

8.Recommendations for Future Work

-briefly describe what is the next logical step to take, given what
you have learned from the analysis of your results.

9.References
-are a list of all the outside sources used in the report.

10.Acknowledgement
-good place to acknowledge and thank your
employer,instructor,research advisor.

11. Appendices
-appear at the end of a report and contain material too bulky for
the report proper.

Elements of an Effective Report

To have an effective report it should be:
 Content-it should be readable and it includes relevant facts
as well as pertinent negatives.
 Accurate-have a specific details.
 Objective-based upon YOUR findings.
 Factual-no assumptions or conclusions.
It is clearly in a logical manner, sequential and formal.
Writing a Scientific Technical
Report
 Decide on the 'Terms of reference' -the purpose of the report
 Decide on the procedure-planning your investigation or
research, and how you'll write the report.
 Find the information-relevant and appropriate.
 Decide on the structure-
 Draft the first part of your report-draft the terms of reference,
procedure and findings, and start to work out what will go in
the report’s appendix.
 Analyse your findings and draw conclusions-s where you
analyse your findings and interpret what you have found.
 Make recommendations-the solution to the problem is and/or
what you think should happen next.
 Draft the executive summary and table of contents-It tells the
readers what the report is about, and summarise the
recommendations.
 Compile a reference list-This is a list of all the sources
you've referred to in the report
 Revise your draft report- correct order

Three Ways of Gathering Data

of Report
1. Interviews
2. Observations
3. Questionnares and Surveys
Ways of Enriching a Report
 Be Open For Conversation
 Better Social Media Plugs
 Interactive Multimedia

AN ILLUSTRATION OF TECHNICAL REPORT WRITING

“MAKING A BIRTHDAY CAKE”
adapted from Kristina Katsaros

Abstract
A cake was prepared for my sister’s birthday party. A
cake-mix was used and produced a satisfactory
cake with only a few minor flaws. It is suggested that
in future, improved results could be attained through
a more thorough mixing of the cake mix prior to
cooking.

Introduction
My sister’s birthday was coming up, so I decided to
bake a cake for her. She was going to be 25 years
old. All her life, angel food cake has been her
favorite cake.

Methods
Because angel food cakes are difficult to make from
scratch, I used a cake-mix (Duncan Hines Cherry
Flavored type). A grease-free mixing bown, and a
special deep tube pan were set out. The cake-mix
comes in two packages, the batter and the eggwhite
material. I mixed the batter first, as suggested in the
instructions that accompanied the package, followed
by the eggwhite. When the eggwhites had reached
the required consistency, the batter was stirred in
and the whole cake mixture poured into the cake
pan. During the mixing, the over was preheated to
425°F. The cake was baked at this temperature for
35 minutes, and then arranged to cool upside down
on an empty bottle as illustrated in Fig. 1.

After the cake had cooled (approximately 45

minutes), the cake was removed from the pan and
frosted with prepared frosting. Some food coloring
was added to part of the frosting and “Happy
Birthday Sis” was written on the top. Five candles
were put on the cake, each representing the five
years of my sister’s life.
Results
The cake was 15 cm high and provided dessert for
10 people at the birthday party. It did have a few
holes in the dough and sagged a little on one side.

Discussion/conclusions
The experiment was successful. The cake was
“oohed” and “aahed” over, and actually tasted good
given that it was from an industrially-prepared cake
mixture. In future, I will continue to use Duncan
Hines cake mixes, but will mix the batter and
eggwhites together more thoroughly. I also intend to
buy a new cake pan with a smoother inner surface in
order to avoid the sagging edges.
