Joseph Edward Umile, CSC July 16, 1948 - January 13, 2013
Brother Joseph Umile, the only child of Joseph William Umile and Rita Kawders Umile, was born on July 16, 1948 in New Haven, CT. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernadette Parish and attended Morris Cove School and then St. Bernadette Elementary School, all in New Haven, CT. In 1966, he graduated from Notre Dame High School, West Haven, CT. Before entering Holy Cross, Joseph earned a BA from Fairfield University in 1970, having studied at the University of Paris from 1968 to 1969. After entering the community, he earned a Master of Arts degree in French at Middlebury College by studying during the summers from 1971 to 1979. Joe did additional studies at Boston College in Religious Studies and Iona College in Education. Prior to entering the Congregation of Holy Cross, he worked as a teacher at his alma mater, Notre Dame High School, West Haven, CT from 1970 to 1974. When Joseph became a candidate in August 1974, he was assigned to teach at Holy Cross, Waterbury, CT for one year before entering the Holy Cross Novitiate in Bennington, VT on August 14, 1975. He professed his first vows on August 7, 1976 and his final vows on August 27, 1983. After completing his Novitiate, Joseph taught French and Italian at Holy Cross High School in Flushing, NY. Starting in 1980 he taught French at Holy Cross High School in Waterbury, CT for four years. In 1984, Joseph went to Notre Dame International School in Rome, Italy where he served as Principal of the high school for two years. He was appointed as Headmaster and returned to the United States six years later when the school closed in 1992. He then served as President of Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, IN for fourteen years. In 2007, Joseph moved to the Holy Cross Community Residence in Cocoa Beach, FL. He did so to provide care to his mother nearby. He also served for a while as the Director of Advancement at Melbourne Central High School in Melbourne, FL. In 2011, Joseph moved to Holy Cross College, South Bend, IN where he served first as the Director of Development and then as the Project Assistant to the President. Joseph was admitted to St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, IN because of respiration problems but suffered from multiple medical issues. On January 13, 2013 with many community members and friends at his bedside praying with him, Joe passed over into eternal life. Those that lived and worked with him learned to ignore the rough exterior and freely given opinions and instead to appreciate how deeply he was dedicated as a religious and how truly generous and caring he was to all. Joseph shared his many gifts and talents wherever he ministered. He will be remembered as loving and building community, evidenced by his willingness to use his excellent cooking skills for the benefit of all. Requiescat in pace! Br. William Zaydak, CSC Provincial
