Mens Golf Opens Up Spring Season with Second Place Finish

NOTRE DAME, IN (April 10, 2013) The Holy Cross Saints men's golf team recently opened its spring season in London, Kentucky to take part in the 20th Annual SEKI-MSC Spring Invitational at Crooked Creek Golf Course. Narrowly sitting in second place after day one, the Saints continued their strong play to hold on to their day one position and finished the tournament in second place out of fifteen teams. "I was really proud of the guys and the way they played," stated coach Tim Holt. "All five guys were very consistent which helped to us finishing in second place." Matthew Code (Belleville, Ontario, Canada) and Mike Prior (Schoolcraft, Michigan) led the way for the Saints, each putting together a tournament total of 152. Despite a team-high 78 on day one, Code responded in day two to put together a two over par 74 and team-low for the tournament. Prior posted two impressive rounds with a 76 and finished tied for sixth place individually with teammate Code. Michael Fitzgerald (Flossmoor, Illinois) was the third Saints golfer to finish in the top 20 individually, after posting a team low round of 75 and an 80 in round two for a tournament total of 155. This gave Fitzgerald a 16th place individual finish. Chris Noble (Niles, Michigan) continued the Saints impressive results with a day one score of 77, the third best team day one score, and closed out with an 80 for a tournament total of 157; good enough for a tie for 23rd individually. Rounding out the Saints second place finish, freshman Cody Richardson (Howe, Indiana) posted rounds of 77 and 82 for a tournament total of 159 and a 30th place individual finish. The 159 tournament total is the lowest of Richardson's career. The second place finish for the Saints gives them their fifth top three finish during the 2012-2013 season. All five participants finished in the top 30 individually out of a 93 player field. "This was a great showing for us, being our first big tournament of the spring season," continued coach Holt. "We only lost to Cumberlands, currently ranked third nationally, and we beat other teams ranked in the top 25, including a Division II team ranked in the top 30. This performance should give us good momentum going into the rest of the season Story contributed by John Brodbeck, Sports Information Director Find information on Holy Cross College by visiting: www.hcc-nd.edu.
