IN THE MEDIA 📰📺📲 | "Why is western Sydney so much hotter than the eastern suburbs?" asks The Guardian's science writer Donna Lu. "As a spring heatwave breaks temperature records, experts say urban design will play a vital role as extreme heat becomes more frequent and severe." "In 2022, the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC) launched Cool Suburbs, an evidence-backed tool for design that takes heat resilience into account. It has already been used to assess planning projects in the City of Sydney and City of Blacktown." Clarence Valley Council invite the community to comment on the Clarence Valley Council's Urban Tree Strategy Review, now on public exhibition. The Urban Tree Strategy is an update to the 2011 Tree Management Strategy developed by Council. Since the 2011 Strategy, there have been significant changes in the policy context for urban tree management. These changes include an increased emphasis on tree canopy in NSW and across Australia and a stronger focus on setting tree canopy targets to assess and determine key management actions. This strategy supports the Council’s Green Infrastructure Strategy, adopted in 2023. The Green Infrastructure Strategy identified two key actions for tree canopy in the Valley: Assessing Council’s existing urban tree canopy cover. 1. Setting targets for urban tree canopy cover. 2. 17% Existing Urban Tree Canopy Cover in the Valley Submissions on the proposed changes to the Urban Tree Strategy close Friday 26 July 2024. This article in The Conversation provides more data that proves what we already know. City planning and urbanisation policies CAN and SHOULD make an impact. As planners, engineers, scientists, architects, social scientists and all who participate in our built environment- we pretty much know all the aspects raised in this great article. How can we drive this into standard practice. It’s often the ‘how’ to get things done that is the hardest. 🌞Today in Athens, one of the pilot sites of the HEART project, temperatures have soared to 36°C . While some sun is good for the mood, Europe, according to scientists, will face increasing temperatures this summer. It's essential to explore innovative solutions to combat urban overheating and safeguard #publichealth and that’s what the #HEART project is trying to do! 🌏 Inspiration can be drawn from other continents as well. Let’s have a look at the work of colleagues from UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, Mulpha and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where the #NorwestCityProject has successfully integrated blue and green infrastructure to create a cooler, more sustainable urban environment. 💧 Their comprehensive *Cooling Guide* offers practical strategies for developers, design practitioners, and planners to mitigate the impacts of urban heat. This guide highlights the importance of ponds and #green spaces, demonstrating their effectiveness in #cooling urban areas and some impact on #health! It provides scientific data and references to help incorporate these strategies from the early stages of planning and design, ensuring a healthier and more #resilient urban environment. 💙 While the consortium works hard on the results of the HEART project study, this guide serves as an excellent resource to understand urban overheating and continue our advocacy for the integration of blue and green spaces. Let's learn from our global colleagues and prepare our cities to face future with resilience and innovation. 🌳 🙏 https://rb.gy/8lvjc6 #HEARTproject #BlueGreenInfrastructure #UrbanHeat #HealthManagement #SustainableCities #ClimateAction #PublicHealth #UrbanPlanning

Shaping national policy and delivery approaches to creating high-quality, well-designed and sustainable urban extensions? Yes please, and especially timely as the new government launches their call for large-scale urban extension and regeneration schemes. Holly Lewis joined the Greenwich chapter of Design Council Homes Taskforce roundtable today, who have been tasked with supporting the new government in creating 1.5 million homes within the UK climate commitments. The roundtable forms one of a series of events convened by the Design Council, the UK’s National Strategic Advisor for design. As one of several select guest experts, Holly contributed to the discussion to help shape policy advice that will be put forward to the government. The discussion, opened by Tom Copley, GLA Deputy Mayor of London for Housing, will continue hearing from leading built environment professionals and policy makers with an aim to identify the practical steps the Government should take to ensure new housing schemes are an asset to the nation and to the environment. 👀 Watch this space to hear and contribute to success stories and continue to shape an evolving template for successful mixed neighbourhoods with new at-scale housing. Today’s news from #Sydney! https://lnkd.in/gcrR-ZPh Investing in high quality #PublicTransport 🚏🚌 is not just a good way to increase #PhysicalActivity and #ActiveTravel. It’s also an investment in our personal and collective #MentalHealth 😄 🙏 Our longitudinal study (https://lnkd.in/gk2jGkzm) from a few years ago confirms on average, people who have access to public transport that resonates with them are (1) more likely to choose it, as well as (2) to choose walking or cycling, over cars for short journeys, AND have (3) less psychological distress and (4) greater mental wellbeing. Westminster City Council has unveiled new draft proposals that would see it adopt a ‘retrofit first’ approach to redevelopment. New rules put forward under a review of the local authority’s City Plan will mean developers must explore the option to retrofit before demolishing buildings. It defines retrofit as re-using at least 50 per cent of the existing building in-situ by mass or volume.

3wWestern sydney is warmer because it is west. It doesn't benefit from eastern suburbs ocean breezes. These are the types of distractions which have contributed to the housing crisis.
