HEAlthier Cities through Blue-Green Regenerative Technologies: the HEART Approach EU Funded BHC-29-2020

About us

European and international cities face major challenges resulting from global geopolitical, economical, climate, and other changes. This intensifies inequalities in health, due to several factors such as living conditions, health-related behavior, education, occupation, and income. Urban areas are under huge pressure to enhance policies in order to become more sustainable and liveable, as well as to provide environments and social fabric that support Public Health (PH) and Wellbeing (WB). The conventional approach to urban and revitalization planning is based mostly on profit criteria with routine methodologies, often lacking advanced integrated methods and concepts with emphasis on health, societal and environmental aspects (including Climate Change-CC). Moreover, local communities’ needs are neglected and hence cities often end up with solutions that are not embraced by local communities and citizens. To address these challenges, the HEART project aims to comprehensively address factors influencing PH&WB, provide evidence base (proven by clinical tests where appropriates) thus improve urban health and reduce health disparities through changes in individual behavior of citizens, stimulated by different policies. This will include advanced BlueGreen (BG) based urban design, where PH, WB, and environmental quality will be intrinsically built-in in all phases of planning and implementation, with strong involvement of local communities to allow them to embrace new solutions

  • Last week, our partner, EHMA - European Health Management Association, represented by Alexis Strader- Director of Policy and Research, presented the #HEARTproject at the 2024 annual conference of the European Partnership on Transforming health and care systems (THCS). The session, titled “Understanding Transformation of Health and Care Systems: From Theory to Practice,” offered a valuable platform to showcase how the HEART project contributes to this important theme. By leveraging a Blue Green (BG) urban planning methodology, the project proposes tailored solutions to tackle socio-economic, environmental, and technical challenges. The goal? To enhance health and wellbeing in urban environments through innovative and sustainable urban planning. 🌱💧 Key Takeaways for Practitioners and Stakeholders: 💡 Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effective urban health solutions require breaking silos and fostering collaboration between policymakers, urban planners, health professionals, and researchers. HEART exemplifies how academic insights can be translated into actionable strategies. 🌍 Scalable Models for Urban Health: HEART is committed to developing scalable and adaptable models to improve health and wellbeing in cities worldwide, serving as a potential template for health system transformation globally. 📊 Inclusive, Evidence-Based Policy: Stakeholders are encouraged to prioritize inclusive, evidence-driven approaches in urban and health policy development to ensure sustainable and equitable outcomes. We’re thrilled to share these insights and remain dedicated to driving transformative dialogue that shapes healthier, more resilient urban environments. 💡 #bluegreenspaces #urbanplanning #sustainabledevelopment

💡 Wrapping up AC's first session: "Understanding Transformation of Health and Care Systems – From Theory to Practice" Today’s session brought diverse perspectives to the table: the institutional one, the academic, the patient's and the practitioner's ones. 🎓 Dimitra Panteli - Overcoming complexity to transform healthcare is essential. From an academic perspective, we must enable innovation through research and knowledge. It's crucial to gather evidence that prevents duplication and drives progress in the field 🏛️ @Loukianos Gatzoulis - To implement integrated care at a large scale, we must focus on two key conditions: 1) Raising know-how across the system, and 2) Mobilizing investments to support the transformation 🗣️ Anca Toma - Patients are not only users of healthcare services: they have direct experience in navigating the system, can identify issues and challenges, are expert in their conditions. For this reason, the transformation of healthcare systems must be designed not just around patients, but with their active engagement at the core. 🩺 Alexis Strader - Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Scalable Solutions for Urban Health, Evidence-Based Decision Making, and Community-Centered Approaches. Together, these pillars pave the way for more inclusive, effective, and sustainable healthcare systems. Thanks also to🎤Gerardo Fortuna for the excellent moderation and to Leticia Sere for the amazing graphic recording 🤩 #THCS2024 #HealthCareTransformation

Hey young people living in Europe! This is your opportunity to shape the future of design and sustainability. Take our survey to share your thoughts on environmental issues. Your voice matters! https://lnkd.in/dK-i36Gw The survey helps us understand: What’s important to you about the environment? What do you know about the EU Green Deal? The results will directly influence our educational programs and the topics of the Next Gen Design open calls for young designers in 2025 and 2026, while the publication with the results analysis will serve organizations working with youth as a reference for future actions, to amplify youth voices and encourage youth engagement in creating solutions for climate action and circular economy across Europe. This survey is part of the #NextGenDesign project which connects young people and young designers to learn and share ideas on sustainable design solutions under the umbrella of 5 European design weeks and festivals: Barcelona Design Week, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK, Skopje Design Week, What Design Can Do in Amsterdam and Mikser Festival in Belgrade.

"Public spaces and health have always been linked, and our task as urban designers and architects is to underline those links and to find the best way to support the harmony between them."  🌱🏙️ Last week, Dr. Stanislava Boskovic from Imperial College London presented at the 17th European Public Health Conference in Lisbon, Portugal in a plenary entitled: Harnessing Social Marketing for Interdisciplinary Health Management- Enhancing Public Health Outcomes. The session was organised by our partner, EHMA - European Health Management Association. Her presentation introduced the #HEARTproject and the importance of interdisciplinary efforts in the health-centric design of public spaces. 🤝 She noted that there is no one recipe to create a truly inclusive space- that it is a continuous and dynamic process which is an effort of knowledge collection, dialogue, and flexibility. 📑🔬 You can watch Dr. Boskovic's full presentation, which starts at 27:10, in the video below. ⬇️⬇️ https://lnkd.in/evggU_8y #urbanplanning #wellbeing #inclusivespaces #naturebasedsolutions #bluegreenspaces #sustainablecities #healthandenvironment #publichealth

Last week, in occasion of the EPH Conference 2024, EHMA - European Health Management Association organised a plenary session on the topic 'Harnessing social marketing for interdisciplinary health management: enhancing public health outcomes'. The session was grounded in the idea that health isn’t just shaped by healthcare professionals, but needs urban planners, architects, educators, and many other professional profiles. Only working together and adopting health-oriented principles across different fields, we can encourage a culture where health is a shared priority. Our plenary presented various case studies. 🔹We started with the importance of educating young people to healthy habits, sustainability, and physical and mental wellbeing. Dr Marina Macchiaiolo presented the educational model of United World College and the significant work these schools do in helping young people becoming change makers. 🔹We spoke about the role of architecture in creating spaces that support health and recovery with Prof Stefano Capolongo, who presented the Design & Health Lab fascinating work on the Hospital of the Future. 🔹We continued with Dr Stanislava Boskovic who presented the work of two important projects, HEART project and euPOLIS, on how thoughtful urban planning can contribute to community wellbeing. 🔹And we concluded with Mr George Valiotis, Executive Director at Health Technology Assessment international (HTAi), on how leaders can foster healthier, more supportive environments within organisations. All this masterfully chaired by EHMA Board Member, Prof Tiago Correia, who I would like to sincerely thank, alongside all speakers. On a very personal note, it was a joy and a full circle moment for me to see the United World Colleges on the stage of #EPH2024. Since the very young age of 15, when I tried to be admitted to the schools (and did not succeed), UWC has had a special place in my heart and got me passionate about education, social responsibility, and human rights. Same passion that many years later got me to EHMA. EUPHA - European Public Health Association #EHMAandyou #healthmanagement

  • 🌆With more and more people living in urban areas, what is the future of approaches to improving urban health? In this final instalment of our interview series with Nathalie Roebbel, 🌍Urban Health Unit Head at the World Health Organization, Nathalie highlights the opportunity to address global health challenges through the lens of urban health. Here’s how we can seize this moment: ➡️ Reframing Urban Health: Urban health is a complex system influenced by economic dynamics 💼, sectoral interventions 🌐, and politics 🗳️. Shifting our perspective to see urban health as this interconnected system allows us to tackle challenges more holistically. ➡️Seeing Cities as Catalysts for Change 🌇: Cities aren’t just densely populated areas- they are hubs of innovation and action 💡. With decision-makers like mayors and local leaders at the forefront, urban areas can drive impactful health policies that ripple out on a national and global scale. 🌱Bearing these factors in mind, pressing issues like climate change can be addressed not as a parallel agenda, but as a priority that interacts with other aspects, such as road safety 🚦and improving physical activity, which serve to improve urban health overall. • 🎈Thank you, Serbian Broadcasting Corporation and Beogradska Hronika for hosting our Sanja Ivankovic (KBC Dr Dragiša Mišović) to announce our clinical study that is about to kick off in Belgrade! ✨All interested citizens willing to contribute to the study by visiting the three blue-green enriched parks: Kalemegdan, Košutnjak, or Ada Ciganlija, and by following our doctors’ instructions are welcome to send their expression of interest to heart.misovic@gmail.com

  • The HEART project dedicated section at the event on the occasion of the 100 years of Milutin Milanković was wrapped with an insight into the social aspect of healthy and livable cities, given by Mikołaj Biesaga and Anna Domaradzka. Our colleagues with the ISS tapped into the challenges of engaging the citizens around green and blue urban spaces and practicing every one’s right to a healthy city, but also how citizens’ science can help decision-makers and experts better plan our public spaces.
