🚀 Transport Research Arena (TRA) is the most relevant EU research and technology conference covering all transport modes and all aspects of mobility. The 2024 edition (15-18 April), hosted by the beautiful city of Dublin, claims the self-explanatory title: “Transport Transitions: Advancing Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility”. 🗓 In the past few days, TRT Trasporti e Territorio participated with presentations in two paper sessions: ✈ "Decarbonize  European aviation: the DESAT Model scenarios on Small Air Transport and short-distance flights ban", related to Aviation advances. 🏙 "Modelling cities’ pathways to zero-emission urban mobility through the simulation of 5 European cities", related to Impact Assessment. IOMAC 2024 PANEL RELEASE: A CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT We are delighted to unveil our second panel of the conference – led by Dave Edwards FRAeS – which will look at the challenges business aviation is facing over and above simply becoming sustainable. Europe and the US remain as the heaviest users of business aviation use notwithstanding increasing activity in South America, Asia and Africa. However, we now see the greatest obstacles to business aviation coming from Europe and the US in terms of increased taxation, regulation, short haul bans, flight shaming etc. Additionally, leaders of business and industry are facing increasing scrutiny over ESG goals and strategy. Even if business aviation was to achieve its sustainability goals, will the challenges stop? Is it an easy vote win for politicians to pick on business aviation? Is it an argument of wealth distribution and is it hypocritical? We cannot ‘wash the oceans’ in terms of media so how do we effectively communicate the value that BA brings? According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) data for 2022, all transports’ (road, rail, shipping, aviation and pipeline transport) share of total CO2 emissions is 23% and aviation’s share of transportation’s emission stands at 9.8%. What do aviation companies do to achieve netZero by 2050, the stated aim of International Air Transport Association (IATA) and to be part of the global mission to decarbonize the world? I interviewed Thomas Burger of Airbus at the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong recently to find out how the plane maker is approaching this topic and finding innovative and disruptive solutions and technologies to take carbon out.
