According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) data for 2022, all transports’ (road, rail, shipping, aviation and pipeline transport) share of total CO2 emissions is 23% and aviation’s share of transportation’s emission stands at 9.8%. What do aviation companies do to achieve netZero by 2050, the stated aim of International Air Transport Association (IATA) and to be part of the global mission to decarbonize the world? I interviewed Thomas Burger of Airbus at the IATA World Cargo Symposium in Hong Kong recently to find out how the plane maker is approaching this topic and finding innovative and disruptive solutions and technologies to take carbon out. Why does so much data go unnoticed?

Replace air with rail travel is the most effective way of reducing CO2, especially across Europe.

As passionate guy for green planet I really appreciate Airbus effort to decarbonize aviation. Especially I keep my fingers crossed for successful disruptive technologies development. However in the same time I would like to encourage Airbus and aviation experts to address very important questions related to secondary impact of SAF on ecosystems and environment (deforestation, water retention, impact on biotopes, as well as moral impact related to using the plants for fuels instead of food production for starving people). Also we still miss capacity for green hydrogen. Another topic to be answerd also is water vapor (as outcome of hydrogen combustion) is also greenhouse contributor.

Airbus's commitment to exploring disruptive technologies for carbon reduction is crucial for the industry's goal of netZero by 2050. Excited to see how these advancements will shape the future of air travel and cargo.
