In Michigan, nearly 12% of people face food insecurity, and many of our community members face barriers to accessing nutritious food. Food insecurity has soared over the past few years, making it more important than ever to create a future where our food system is equitable, sustainable, and equipped to meet southeast Michigan’s needs. At our foundation, we support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Fair Food Network, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Make Food Not Waste, who are working to increase food access, destigmatized food insecurity, and provide education and resources so that people throughout our region can thrive. Boo-oo-tiful bounty… carving out a solution to Hallowe’en’s haunting food waste In 2023, 39.9 million pumpkins were grown in the UK: 55% of them were never eaten. Scary. With the cost-of-living crisis and the increasing demands we make on our planet, there’s gotta be a way of doing better! Bulbous orange, pumpkins are a much-loved part of Hallowe’en, carved into ghoulish faces and lit by flickering tealights that evoke nightmares and monsters from fairytale and fable. Did you know that in the United States, nearly 40% of the food sold at grocery stores goes to waste? In fact, an estimated 80 million tons of food gets thrown away each year. On top of that, an estimated 45 million Americans report experiencing food insecurity. Franklin, TN-based nonprofit, One Generation Away seeks to stop food waste—and more importantly, feed those who need it. The organization offers a mobile pantry—delivering boxes of food to those in need, no questions asked. The items One Generation Away offers are all perfectly viable and healthful, and typically include fresh produce and pantry staples like peanut butter, soups, cereal, and granola bars. Provisions Group team members recently gathered to help pack boxes as part of our Planting Seeds ethos. As symbolized by our wheat logo, when you help others, everyone can reap a harvest. As someone passionate about food security, I was alarmed when a national leader in food rescue said to me, “If we pay farmers, they will expect to be paid.” 🧐🤨😱 This statement highlights a critical issue in food sustainability ——->>>> the donation-based model of the charitable food system. That's why I am teaming up with a Pennsylvania farmer to educate her colleagues on food equity for the farmer. Our workshop session title: “Food Dignity: Get Paid to Fight Hunger." It's crucial that we recognize the value of farmers' hard work and compensate them appropriately.
