We are happy to announce our Inaugural Summer Food Drive! 🌞 Help us reach our goal of feeding 100 families this summer! 🌞 As summer rays blanket the landscape, the challenge of food insecurity intensifies for many individuals and families. ◾ With schools closing for vacation, the safety net of school meal programs disappears, leaving children at risk of going without nutritious meals. ◾ The soaring temperatures amplify the strain on limited resources, making it difficult for vulnerable communities to secure consistent access to fresh, wholesome food. ◾ In our current economic climate, more families are facing food insecurity than ever. Surprisingly, this often includes households with two working parents. As we savor the flavors of summer, let's also turn our attention to the urgent need for community-driven initiatives, support networks, and sustainable solutions to ensure that fewer people go hungry during these sunlit months. With grocery costs having risen by 24.7% since March 2020 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), and less overstock available for donation, food banks are finding it increasingly difficult to support those in need. But there's hope! * On Fifth Third Day, and throughout May, our collective actions will make a tangible difference. A healthy meal delivered to someone facing food insecurity can mean better educational outcomes, an improvement in physical and mental health, as well as cost savings from reduced landfill and CO2 emissions. What is hard to value is the dignity of receiving a nutritious, prepared meal. This quarter we really have seen the power of a community coming together to help address food insecurity in New Jersey, food waste and its impact on the environment. Since January, 60 meal donors, including corporations, hospitals and educational institutions, 125 volunteers, and 25 nonprofit partners have joined our ‘meal recovery revolution’ to recover and serve 21,000 prepared meals that would otherwise have gone to waste. But most important of all are the recipients. The 2️⃣1️⃣ 0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ meals have gone to ensure food security amongst the clients of 25 New Jersey nonprofits and 60 families in the Princeton area who have received a healthy, delicious, prepared meal twice a week. Recovering 21,000 meals means that our community has also saved 120,000 lbs of CO2 eq from being released into the atmosphere since the start of the year! #foodrecovery #foodwaste #foodinsecurity #ShareMyMeals #zerowaste #sustainability #newjersey #socialimpact

How much bread do you think is in this photo? 🤔 The food that we recover is priceless to our nonprofit partners for their food distribution and to our neighbors at our markets, but it does come with a pretty huge price tag in potentially wasted resources and value. 🍞 We've distributed over $5,000 worth of baked goods (and this is a conservative estimate!) at the markets alone so far this year. On top of that, the bread was baked using a dozen ingredients including flour, which grew on limited agricultural land with months of hard work and precious freshwater, and then transported to its final location on a truck that produced more carbon emissions. This is just a small example of the 40% of food being wasted in the U.S. each year. It's so crazy to think about just how much food is produced and never eaten, but we're glad we can do this work to help feed people instead! ... #foodrecovery #foodrescue #food #denver #nonprofit

As someone passionate about food security, I was alarmed when a national leader in food rescue said to me, “If we pay farmers, they will expect to be paid.” 🧐🤨😱 This statement highlights a critical issue in food sustainability ——->>>> the donation-based model of the charitable food system. That's why I am teaming up with a Pennsylvania farmer to educate her colleagues on food equity for the farmer. Our workshop session title: “Food Dignity: Get Paid to Fight Hunger." It's crucial that we recognize the value of farmers' hard work and compensate them appropriately.
