In KKR’s Q4’23 earnings call, they noted that around $75 billion of KKR’s $533 billion assets under management come from individual investors. With the appetite for greater returns in a high-inflation environment, investors are turning to #PrivateMarket funds to enhance their portfolio's returns. However, despite the evident growth in #PrivateMarkets, wealth managers only allocate a small proportion of their portfolios to private markets (around 10-15%). To overcome this, #WealthManagers need to adjust their fund criteria to enable broader access to private markets and address any perceived barriers. As pension and endowment fundraising slows, private credit managers are turning to wealthy individuals for investment opportunities. Firms like Blue Owl Capital and Ares Management Corporation are setting ambitious growth targets, with Ares aiming to expand assets to US$750 billion by 2028, inspired by Blackstone's $54 billion success in the Private Credit Fund sector. Private credit funds offer stability in contrast to volatile public markets, providing regular withdrawal options to investors. Notably, Blackstone's fund allows quarterly redemptions of up to 5% of net asset value, subject to board approval. Despite the promising outlook, challenges lie ahead. Illiquid investments may test retail investors accustomed to liquidity, as illustrated by Blackstone and Starwood Real Estate facing backlash for limiting withdrawals. Furthermore, heightened market risks with increasing defaults post a resilience test for private credit funds. Moreover, competition from banks offering cheaper loans is squeezing private credit returns, while the funds' high management fees ranging from 0.5% to 2%, coupled with performance fees, make them relatively expensive for investors. On a positive note, attracting wealthy individuals to private credit could enhance transparency in the sector by encouraging the public sharing of fund documents, potentially mitigating some risks. #Thoughtleadership from William Marr of Welton Investment Partners "The traditional 60/40 model is insufficient for meeting many investors’ goals and RIAs need other options. 2022 was a terrible year for 60/40 strategies, but there seem to be a lot of advisors who believe it was an aberration and gained confidence as 2023 rebounded. But on closer examination, that is just not the case. Since January of 2022, the S&P 500 has had 12 negative months and, in every one of these cases, global bonds have sold off as well. The protective quality of bonds during recent “flight to quality” periods has been non-existent. The income component is a nice addition to portfolios, but the non-correlation has disappeared. We agree that strong private equity firms can thrive in this climate by focusing on operational improvement and adapting to rapid industry changes. The world of private equity is shifting. Barron’s recent deep dive estimates that private equity assets could reach $12 trillion by 2028, and a big part of that growth? It’s coming from high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) and family offices stepping up their interest in private markets. In the past, this asset class was almost exclusively dominated by institutions, pension funds, endowments, and the like. But as volatility in public markets rises, more HNWIs are exploring alternatives for diversification, steady returns, and frankly, something they feel they have more control over. Private equity has this appeal, it offers long-term value creation that doesn’t hinge on the daily swings of stock prices. What’s exciting is how private wealth investors are no longer held back by the barriers that once defined private equity. New structures and platforms (the likes of which we’re heavily involved in at Mara) have made it simpler and more tax-efficient for HNWIs to access these investments. Friends and family pools, for example, are becoming much more than just personal networks—they’re evolving into structured, compliant pathways that offer access to top-tier private equity funds. From where I sit, this shift is also driven by a generational change. Today’s investors are looking for more than returns; they want flexibility, transparency, and efficiency in how they invest. Traditional private equity structures don’t always align with those expectations. That’s where more tailored solutions—like the SPVs and feeder structures we focus on—come in. They’re designed not just to simplify the investment process but also to offer a direct line into these opportunities, without the administrative burdens typically associated with large fund entry requirements. It’s interesting to consider: will this #retailisation of private equity fundamentally change the sector? Will it push private equity firms to rethink how they engage with investors beyond the institutions they’re used to?
