Progress includes: 1️⃣ The supply of capital seeking place-based impact investment is increasing Over the past few years, there has been a marked increase in Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) investments in PBII sectors in the UK, catalysing innovative strategies for scale and diversity. Two thirds of LGPS plan to increase their allocation of local investments. 2️⃣ There is an increasing demand for impact capital Local and combined authorities are becoming increasingly proactive in seeking partnerships with private sector investors. Our ‘Place Pilots’ in Wakefield and Southampton contribute to this growing field by supporting local authorities to build the capabilities to engage more effectively with investors seeking aligned societal outcomes. The market is experiencing a growth in investment products targeting positive local outcomes, such as Schroders’s Real Estate Impact Fund, Octopus’ Affordable Housing Fund, and Gresham House’s Sustainable Infrastructure Fund, which recently secured £450 million investment from 8 LGPS funds. 3️⃣ The enabling infrastructure to support PBII is being built Blended finance mechanisms, such as the UK Infrastructure Bank’s loan guarantees, are demonstrating the catalytic potential of blended finance. And we're growing the place-based impact investing movement. The Institute’s Place Coalition and partnership on the PBII Network (hosted by The Good Economy), have become instrumental platforms for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Here at The Society of Pension Professionals we have today published our latest topical pensions paper, this time on Jeremy Hunt's plans to get British pension funds to invest at least 5% of their funds into unlisted British equity and to fully disclose their investment levels. As The Society of Pension Professionals DC Committee member Amanda Small observes, “...Government must be careful that a new reporting obligation like this does not inadvertently channel DC schemes’ investments into UK-centric asset classes that currently neither reflect a robust investment case or meet trustees’ requirements for diversification, sufficient risk-adjusted returns and avoidance of concentration risk.   If the Government wants to encourage greater investment in UK companies then these companies need to offer better risk-adjusted investment returns. 📰 #PlaceBased #ImpactInvesting (#PBII) Reporting Framework gains traction with the release of London Pensions Fund Authority report. The London Pensions Fund Authority (LPFA), a £7.8 billion Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) Fund, recently released its inaugural ‘Investing in the UK’ report, developed in partnership with The Good Economy and Local Pensions Partnership Investments. The report uses our PBII Reporting Framework - developed with a group of LGPS and asset managers - to offer a comprehensive overview of the geographical distribution and specifics of the Fund’s UK real estate and infrastructure investments. Key findings include: ➡️ Around 13% of the LPFA’s portfolio is already invested in local communities around the UK ➡️ The LPFA is invested in over 250 properties, ports, hotels, warehouses, trains, wind and solar farms and other assets across the UK. ➡️ Over 70% of their UK infrastructure and real estate investments by value are outside London. ➡️ They are invested in over 100 clean energy investments, most of which are in Wales, Scotland and the East Midlands. ➡️ 80% of the LPFA’s housing investments by value are in London with the rest in the South East. The LPFA joins a group of progressive local government pension funds including South Yorkshire Pension Fund (SYPA), Clwyd Pension Fund and Greater Manchester Pension Fund (GMPF), who all recognise the role the PBII Reporting Framework can play in directing UK pension money to deliver more inclusive and sustainable development at home. All the best examples of things that are built to last are when they have been built together,” says Lisa Nandy, Secretary of State for Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the foreword to the latest market sizing report from the Impact Investing Institute.   It is great to see charities​ and philanthropy referenced in the report.   As Lisa Nandy’s quote suggests, we cannot achieve the full potential for positive, sustainable change in our communities and the wider world without the effective deployment of capital across the full spectrum of capital.   Responsible business, ESG, impact investing, social investing and philanthropy all play different and important roles in driving positive change for people and planet. We’ve released our latest UK natural capital accounts, estimating the current value of natural wealth, and what it could provide for current and future generations. Some key findings: ·      In 2022, the total asset value of ecosystem services in the UK was £1.8 trillion, an increase of 11% from 2018. ·      Health benefits from recreation made the largest contribution to the total asset value of UK ecosystem services in 2022 (£489 billion).  ·      An estimated 20 million people gained health benefits from recreation in nature. ·      The air pollution regulation service made up 81% of the annual value of all regulating services in 2022; nature removed almost 1.4 million tonnes of pollutants from the air. ·      Renewable electricity provisioning was almost five times higher in 2022 than 2011 at 99,192 gigawatt hours (GWh) compared with 21,899 GWh.
