Open Water Austria!🇦🇹 In six months the Woerthersee Swim Austria will take place for the seventh time! Here's a quick update on the 10k distance: The distance is swum in two circles of 5k each. There is an aid station on the course with sports bars and jelly for swimmers, which can be used in each lap. Start and finish are at the Klagenfurt lido, the start takes place at 10 a.m. in the morning. To date, swimmers from 10 nations have registered for this distance, listed here according to the number of participants: Germany, Ireland, Turkey, Italy, England, Austria, Holland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Poland. There are two categories for the 10k distance: with or without a wetsuit, 65% of swimmers swim with a wetsuit! 20% of participants to date are women and 80% of participants are men. A total of 60% of the places have already been booked.🏊🏊🏊🏊 We have three age groups: 16 - 30 years, 31 - 50 years and 50+. Each participant receives a starting package and a finisher medal! SWIMMING IN PARIS' SEINE RIVER... The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, took a dip in the slightly murky waters of the Seine on Wednesday to demonstrate the river is now clean enough for outdoor Olympic swimming events. Wearing goggles and a wet suit, the city leader swam breaststroke before immersing her face and beginning a front crawl. Asked how she felt before taking the plunge in front of a large contingent of reporters, the mayor said: "Really good." During the Games the open water swimming events - the marathon swim and the swimming phase of the triathlon - are scheduled to be held in the Seine. There is, however, a plan B - if the Seine does not pass water quality tests, the events will be held at the Vaire-sur-Marne water park. Once the Games are over, the plan is to create multiple swimming areas along the river which will be open to Paris residents and visitors during the summer. The Seine has been banned for swimming because of the poor water quality since 1924 - during that time numerous promises have been made to clean it up, but none have come to fruition. Despite huge investment in the clean-up operation, doubt remain about water quality levels following periods of heavy rain or storms - when Paris' ageing sewerage system often struggles to cope with the volume of water. History of Russian water sports federations’ unification The Russian swimming federations used to function as autonomous and independent from each other until 2024. For comparison, the world’s governing body of swimming sports, World Aquatics, is a single organization today that oversees six sports: swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, diving, open water swimming and extreme high diving. On October 1, 2024, President of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov announced a decision to unify all Russian sports swimming federations into a single body. He noted at that time "that this measure could be a logical continuation of the integration processes which started following the unification of the gymnastics federations [in October 2024]," adding that this move would "provide for stronger and more coordinated structure that can effectively develop our sporting disciplines." According to Salnikov, the unification of federations will contribute not only to the consolidation of resources and simplification of administrative procedures, but will also improve the quality of training and competition processes. Russian Water Polo Federation President Sharonov said earlier he hoped that the merger "will give a new impetus to the development of water polo." Druzhinin, the chief of the Russian Diving Federation noted that it "would only be for the benefit" and "will be in line with international trends, and will promote further our communications with the World Aquatics." Olga Brusnikina, President of the FSPR, also stated that the merger was the best thing. Brusnikina, the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation, also pointed out the feasibility of unifying. Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev announced on October 1 his support for the initiative to unify the country’s federations of water sports. The minister stated that such a move "would help achieve better results, primarily in the development of children's and youth sports, and will increase popularity among the people." I need your help. As I mentioned before, I am thinking of growing the Go Goosey brand to include adult onesies (women's onesies to start with) to be used after swimming, surfing, for festivals and camping (for use out of the communal showers), hot tubs and paddleboarding, for swim teachers or after any water activity. Should we stick with the 2 colour combinations, like our kid's quick dry onesies or should we do a single colour-only option? Open Water Swimming Workshop, Sunday 10th November. I split the team into two groups, with the faster athletes focusing on specific techniques while chasing each other down, simultaneously improving their endurance. In a triathlon, the swim portion can sometimes feel like a bit of a free-for-all, especially at the start when everyone is jockeying for position. While there isn't a strict rule against swimming over someone's legs, it is generally considered poor sportsmanship. However, we still practised it! (What if someone does it to you? You need to deal with it...) Triathlons can be physically demanding, and accidental contact is common, but intentionally swimming over another competitor can lead to injuries and create unnecessary friction so please remember that. Stay aware of your surroundings and while you should respect each other's space as much as possible, it's a hard task when there are literally 100s of you in the water at the same time. We also did in-water starts, buoy turns, Aussie exits, traditional beach starts and dolphin dives, as displayed magnificently by Sev! This technique involves diving down as the wave approaches, leading with your hands. When your hands touch the bottom, dig them into the sand and pull your body forward. Plant your feet on the bottom and launch your body out of the water. As your body arcs over the surface, swing your arms around to prepare for the next dive. This method helps you move quickly through waves and save energy, particularly in shallow water starts.
