The RYA is delighted to announce the appointment of two new directors of its board- Dr Tony Hockley and Sonali Siriwardena. Tony Hockley, an economist, brings experience in policy design and delivery, and Sonali Siriwardena, a keen kitesurfer, brings extensive knowledge in sustainability matters. The RYA welcomes the announcement from UK Sport outlining a record investment from Department for Culture, Media and Sport and The National Lottery into Olympic and Paralympic sport over the next four years. Mark Robinson, the RYA’s Performance Director, said: “Today’s announcement is very positive for sailing. We are incredibly grateful to UK Sport for continuing to support sailing and all the other Olympic and Paralympic sports. “We are confident that with this funding we can continue to deliver world-class support for our athletes, in both the short and long term. As part of our continued evolution of the Junior and Youth Racing Pathway, we are pleased to roll out criteria and application timelines for our Pathway Club and Talent Academy initiatives. The two new initiatives will help create quality environments more locally to sailors at different stages of their journeys, reducing the need for them to travel long distances for training and reducing the financial and time cost to sailors and their families. We are thrilled to announce that The Clean Water Sports Alliance has won the prestigious Sports Journalism Awards ‘Sport for Change’ Award 2024. The prestigious award recognises the importance of collective efforts across the sporting industry to champion environmental stewardship, and this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our small yet mighty teams and leaders within each member organisation. The judges for this award said they were incredibly inspired to learn how so many organisations are using the power of sport and physical activity to create a positive impact. Judges said that the Clean Water Sports Alliance’s collaborative approach to tackling poor water quality and pollution could, and should act as a blueprint for other sports organisations to follow as we seek to increase the positive impact of sport on people and the planet, influence key decision-makers and drive positive change.
