History of Russian water sports federations’ unification The Russian swimming federations used to function as autonomous and independent from each other until 2024. For comparison, the world’s governing body of swimming sports, World Aquatics, is a single organization today that oversees six sports: swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, diving, open water swimming and extreme high diving. On October 1, 2024, President of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov announced a decision to unify all Russian sports swimming federations into a single body. He noted at that time "that this measure could be a logical continuation of the integration processes which started following the unification of the gymnastics federations [in October 2024]," adding that this move would "provide for stronger and more coordinated structure that can effectively develop our sporting disciplines." According to Salnikov, the unification of federations will contribute not only to the consolidation of resources and simplification of administrative procedures, but will also improve the quality of training and competition processes. Russian Water Polo Federation President Sharonov said earlier he hoped that the merger "will give a new impetus to the development of water polo." Druzhinin, the chief of the Russian Diving Federation noted that it "would only be for the benefit" and "will be in line with international trends, and will promote further our communications with the World Aquatics." Olga Brusnikina, President of the FSPR, also stated that the merger was the best thing. Brusnikina, the Russian Synchronized Swimming Federation, also pointed out the feasibility of unifying. Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev announced on October 1 his support for the initiative to unify the country’s federations of water sports. The minister stated that such a move "would help achieve better results, primarily in the development of children's and youth sports, and will increase popularity among the people." In 2021, Swimming Australia released its 2022-2032 (Our Decade of Opportunity) Strategic Plan. Swimming Victoria (SV) supports the direction Swimming Australia is taking to ‘inspire Australia to swim’ as we power towards the 2032 home Olympic and Paralympic Games. ‘Swimming 2028 - Inspiring Victoria to Swim’, reflects this alignment and outlines Swimming Victoria’s Strategic Plan for 2021 – 2028. This Strategic Plan was developed after a time of unprecedented change which started with the 2020 Victorian bushfires, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was updated in 2023, at a different stage of pandemic recovery, while Victoria was in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, experiencing a weakened economy and floods were challenging the sustainability of various aspects of the aquatic industry. How expensive can swimming be…? Swimming in the Seine has been banned for over a century because the water quality was about as appealing as…a soggy baguette! But Paris made a bold move! Paris splashed out 1.4 billion € to clean up the river for the Olympics! Yep – the triathlon and marathon swimming events will take place right in the once-dodgy Seine! The secret weapon? A colossal tank the size of 20 Olympic swimming pools! This bad boy gobbles up (most of) the dirty water that usually goes gurgling into the river after a heavy rain, keeping the Seine from turning into a giant, murky soup. Now, here's the kicker: The recent rainfalls during and after the Olympic Games opening ceremony pushed the system and caused a spike of coliform bacteria. This caused the recent postponement of the triathlon events! So, while significant efforts have been made to improve water quality, there is still a possibility that the Seine may not be completely clean for swimming.

People rarely think about swimming. But when the Olympics come around, everyone’s talking about it. Why? Well, the games have long been an incredibly powerful tool to drive awareness to lesser-watched sports. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, swimming events attracted millions of viewers. The U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials alone were averaging 2.7 million nightly viewers. (Which is way more than usual.) USA Swimming plans to keep the buzz going. They want to turn swimming into a popular sport, even when the Olympics aren’t on. How are they planning to do that? With their “Goggles On” campaign: → The campaign kicks off with a fun ad showing kids diving into pools → The focus will then shift to Olympic athletes during the summer, using athletes to inspire young fans. → Local swim clubs are also set to receive toolkits with signs, stickers, and posters to help spread the campaign's message in their communities. The goal is to turn short-term interest into long-term engagement, growing USA Swimming memberships and maintaining enthusiasm beyond the Olympics. In short, USA Swimming will use the Olympics as a springboard to popularise swimming. Is there anything else you think they should be doing?

In a 200m swimming race, a swimmer has to make three flips in a 50m standard Olympic pool in addition to his start. If we made a slight modification and elongated the pool to be a 200m pool, where no flips will be required, the rank of the swimmers may change dramatically. The winners / champions will be different persons. Some swimmers are better in long pools because they have more endurance and can control their pace all over the distance. Some other swimmers are better in short pools where they can make advantage of the multiple flips to give them extra push and give their arms some rest. However, the pool is the same every time. so most of times we have one sort of champions, those who can swim better in a shorter pool with more flips. Some times, it is not about the swimmer, it is about the pool. If Christiano and Misse born 100 years earlier, may be people would called them a two useless persons who won't make their ways to college and wasting their times playing in the streets.

SWIMMING IN PARIS' SEINE RIVER... The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, took a dip in the slightly murky waters of the Seine on Wednesday to demonstrate the river is now clean enough for outdoor Olympic swimming events. Wearing goggles and a wet suit, the city leader swam breaststroke before immersing her face and beginning a front crawl. Asked how she felt before taking the plunge in front of a large contingent of reporters, the mayor said: "Really good." During the Games the open water swimming events - the marathon swim and the swimming phase of the triathlon - are scheduled to be held in the Seine. There is, however, a plan B - if the Seine does not pass water quality tests, the events will be held at the Vaire-sur-Marne water park. Once the Games are over, the plan is to create multiple swimming areas along the river which will be open to Paris residents and visitors during the summer. The Seine has been banned for swimming because of the poor water quality since 1924 - during that time numerous promises have been made to clean it up, but none have come to fruition. Despite huge investment in the clean-up operation, doubt remain about water quality levels following periods of heavy rain or storms - when Paris' ageing sewerage system often struggles to cope with the volume of water. However, tests done in recent weeks have shown that the water is safe in which to swim. europeanamericantravel.com

This remarkable swimming pool stadium transformation signals a new era for major swimming events, and sets a new benchmark for future Olympics. The US Olympic Swimming Trials just became the largest swimming event ever, drawing a world record 22,209 fans to Lucas Oil Stadium – the home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. To host the USA Swimming event, the NFL stadium was transformed into a swimming arena for the 10-day competition. The transformation... It took 3 years of planning, design, and preparation, including 8000+ hours of integrated expertise from over a dozen different suppliers including those specialising in: 1. Construction and dismantling of large-scale temporary pools 2. Plumbing, pumps & filtration 3. Event management & entertainment services Event workers spent 3 weeks on the transformation - removing turf, goals posts and seats before constructing the pools. A massive amount of inputs and materials were required: • 78,000 square-feet of decking • 55 tons of stainless steel • 1,175 meters of floating lane ropes • Almost 2 million gallons of water The result: • A 50-meter, 10-lane Olympic-sized swimming pool fit for competition • 25-meter warmup-warm pool, separated by a massive curtain down the center of the stadium • A custom-built deck wrapped around the pool to make it appear the pools were dug into the stadium floor • Corporate suites below deck, providing underwater views • 30,000 seat capacity • World class stadium presentation (screens, lighting & production) comparable to other forms of sport & entertainment such as the WWE This new innovative approach to hosting major swimming events seems to have triggered inspiration for the upcoming olympics.
