Earlier today, Don Antonucci, President and Chief Executive Officer of Providence Health Plan, joined key industry leaders at the 12th Annual CEO + CFO Roundtable for a session titled, "Driving Innovation in Healthcare Transformation." The panel explored strategies for healthcare organizations to embrace innovation and lead transformative change in an evolving industry. It is nice to be able to say "value" but it is far more difficult to define it and collect the data. For instance, what is a good diet? What is adequate exercise? These are far more impactful to the long-term health of a patient with coronary disease than having a statin or platelet inhibitor prescribed for the patient. But the latter are easier to measure. For that matter, how do we know if the patient is even taking the medication? It is far easier to check off items in a note: how many systems did you review; did you document a differential diagnosis; did you document the complexity of a procedure? Until we solve the data collection problem, we will not have truly effective value-based care at scale. #valuebasedcare #populationhealth #datagovernance

At least a part of the answer, Andy Bindman, is that it’s easier for plans and providers to simply go through the motions of a FFS contract. Adding shared savings and shared risk is complicated, and there is enough complexity in healthcare. Simplifying the contracting process for VBC is not sexy or intuitive, but it’s a huge part of the actual answer, especially outside of large integrated plans/providers. #vbc

That is over $100B for employers across the country, simply "left on the table". Too many benefit advisors cite they "don't know a better way", but some do and they're exploiting the opportunity to take care of their employers while growing the client books. As anyone in the #employerbenefits knows, new relationships are being forged every day between employers and providers. These partnerships must be built on #valuebased principles, as we can not afford to continue to sponsor volume-based incentives. Employers must use their feet and move their business to models that reward quality, experience, and avoidable cost reduction.
