The National Committee for Nutrition at the Australian Academy of Science this week published a review of the implementation of their decadal plan for the science of nutrition. Nourishing Australia: A decadal plan for the science of nutrition launched in 2019, outlined four key pillars where research will contribute to enhancing the health of Australians: - Social factors that determine dietary choices - Nutrition mechanisms underpinning healthy and productive lives - Precision and personalised nutrition that account for differences between people - Education and research training to ensure that Australians are empowered to make knowledgeable dietary choices. The review brought together one hundred and nine early and mid-career professionals with experienced professionals to review progress towards each of the decadal plan’s pillar goals and provide a road map for implementation over the next 5 years. There are many different ways to approach nutrition! One way to characterize approaches is distinguishing between "quantitative" or "qualitative" nutrition - each with benefits and drawbacks. Most popular 'diets' take a more quantitative approach, with specific guidelines, rules and measurements to follow. While this certainly can be beneficial for some (for example those with specific nutritional needs, lack of nutritional literacy, or those who are not yet in-tune with their bodies internal cues), a quantitative approach can be limiting or restrictive. No one approach is 'perfect', but we encourage you to think about which approach (or approaches!) would work best for you! #nutrition #foodlog #dietculture #mindfuleating #personalizedcare
