Materiality of Nutrition A report looking into the materiality of nutrition was published yesterday. Listening to the webinar yesterday, a very simplified summary of the report is; - Nutrition is indeed a "material" issue, both from a health perspective, and the cost to society. - However, with company information often focusing on matters that impact the short term bottom line, there is less focus on risk of not addressing malnutrition. - Therefore, is a missed opportunity to recognise the hidden costs, and therefore the market has not clearly priced in the risks and opportunities of nutrition. To be honest, it is a more nuanced message than most people want. But my personal take is; - I think we all agree intuitively that we would like to lead healthy lives, and that food/nutrition is a critical part of this. Strangely, or perhaps because this is so obvious, we just haven't prioritised this enough into the valuation of companies. - Collectively we should be doing more to encourage better understanding, better disclosure, and better frameworks of measurement, in order to get better practice. ATNI cannot do this alone, but its work till date can be leveraged. The National Committee for Nutrition at the Australian Academy of Science this week published a review of the implementation of their decadal plan for the science of nutrition. Nourishing Australia: A decadal plan for the science of nutrition launched in 2019, outlined four key pillars where research will contribute to enhancing the health of Australians: - Social factors that determine dietary choices - Nutrition mechanisms underpinning healthy and productive lives - Precision and personalised nutrition that account for differences between people - Education and research training to ensure that Australians are empowered to make knowledgeable dietary choices. The review brought together one hundred and nine early and mid-career professionals with experienced professionals to review progress towards each of the decadal plan’s pillar goals and provide a road map for implementation over the next 5 years. My favorite part of Nutrition is Nutrition for chronic diseases. Interesting right? This type of nutrition helps individuals manage conditions like diabetes, heart diseases, obesity and many more through personalized nutrition plans/diets. An aspect which intrigues me the most is when some of my clients tell me different types of nutrition myths they've heard as regards some of these diseases, I'm always in awe! 😂 🗑️ No, you don't have to restrict your diet to consuming only wheat flour because you have diabetes! 🗑️ No, you don't have to skip breakfast because you want to loose weight! 🗑️ No, you don't have to cut out an entire food group that leads to weight gain/loss! 🗑️ No, because Mr A's father had HBP and he was told not to eat some certain food does not mean Mr B's father who has same condition shouldn't eat those foods! Nutrition has been made easy for all us, Nutrition should be personalized, Nutrition should be fun, Nutrition should be educative not misleading! I am proud to be a nutritionist. 1moThis is hard because we are told milk is good for you then is not, and then eggs are bad and then changes to wait, are really good for you ! So yes picking what is good and bad is a hard choice because rules change.
