For the last 12 months, the mid-term review committee has been reviewing the progress and the modern context of Nourishing Australia, the Decadal plan for nutrition science in Australia. Dr Emma Beckett presented an update at the Nutrition Society of Australia Annual Scientific Meeting last week, right as the mid-term review document was released. You can read the review and the original 10 year plan here: https://lnkd.in/g6VRADBb Thanks to Prof Lauren Ball, Prof. Nenad Naumovski (PhD), Prof. Margaret Allman-Farinelli and Dr Luke Williams, Ph.D. for joining Dr Emma Beckett on the mid-term review committee. Reach out if you would like to be involved in any of the implementation activities - this plan belongs to all of nutrition science, it took many hands to create it, review it, and it will take many hands to see the ambition and vision realised.

About us
Nourishing Australia: a decadal plan for the science of nutrition, was published in 2019 by the National Committee for Nutrition at the Australian Academy of Science with generous funding from the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Learned Academies Special Projects scheme. The plan sets out a strategy for realising the vision that Australian nutrition science plays a key role in improving long-term health and wellbeing globally, while delivering environmental, social and economic benefits nationally with core values of equity, sustainability, collaboration and innovation. The National Committee for Nutrition fosters nutritional science in Australia, links the Academy to Australian nutritional scientists and relevant scientific and other societies, and links Australian and overseas nutritionists, primarily through the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS).

The disconnect between food that we're eating and nutrition and health outcomes is a real problem. Visiting farms, seeing food production at the source can go a long way to understand that nutrition is intrinsically linked to the food we consume. Many local councils even have agri-food tours. The Brisbane city council have veggie-garden workshop that explain how to grow fresh produce at home in veggie beds or pot plants followed by a great lunch made using the fresh produce on hand. Food is the great connector between agriculture and the food supply, and nutrition and health outcomes.

I think the disconnection from the food that we are eating is one of the core underlying issues of our agrifood system. My main recommendation is to visit farms and to rebuild relationships with the people growing our food. If this is not an option for you, then growing food even in your city apartment on a very small scale can be a great first step. I still remember a cherry tomato plant that I grew in my apartment in Amsterdam 10 years ago. It completely escalated and provided more delicious tomatoes than we could ever eat with the 4 people in the house. To get you started/inspired, some of the ideas in the video below might help :) Disclaimer here, I have not tried any of these methods myself, but I would warmly invite you to do it and to see what happens.

It's been a while since a profile drop, but with the year rounding up, it's time to introduce some more of the National Committee for Nutrition members. And this month we have Professor Sarah McNaughton Discipline Lead for Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, and Health and Well-Being Centre for Research Innovation, The University of Queensland. With a career spanning research roles, fellowships & advisory positions with the Medical Research Council, Deakin University, Heart Foundation, Australian Research Council, National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, Australian Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance (ACDPA), Nutrition Australia,Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Victorian Department of Health plus others, Prof Sarah is a leader in nutrition and public health strategies and policy. In 2021, she was appointed the Chair of the NHMRC Dietary Guidelines Expert Committee. The thing that's cool about Sarah's expertise is that while she is a dietitian, she combines epidemiology with practical strategies for incorporating health into life with a focus on food literacy, eating patterns & dietary behaviours that affect what we eat. Keep her deets close folks. Let's hear from Sarah: 😀 What does Nutrition mean to you? Nutrition is such a fundamental aspect of everyday life and brings endless opportunities for conversations as it spans biological, social, cultural and environmental dimensions. 😉 Interest(s) in Nutrition I am a public health nutritionist + nutritional epidemiologist + dietitian & I have interests in: 🍇 examining dietary patterns for health & wellbeing 🍒 understanding the determinants and influences on food intake 🍈 nutrition communication, and 🍎 the synthesis & translation of nutrition science into policies & strategies - that work in the real world. 😎 What do you bring to the NCN? Broad experience and vision across the continuum of nutrition science, with particular expertise in public health nutrition. 🤔 Who do you think the Decadal plan is important to? And why? It is directly relevant to anyone working across the nutrition science continuum as it shapes our future priorities and aspirations. But ultimately it serves the wider Australian community as we seek to improve health through food and nutrition. 💡 If the Decadal Plan strategies are implemented, what do you home Australia will look like in 10-years’ time? I would hope that it results in a vibrant, connected professional workforce that is able to support Australians to achieve health & wellbeing through food, AND a recognition by all sectors of government of the importance of investing in nutrition science to ensure a happy, productive & nourished Australia. 😍 Favorite food? So many! But I could never give up cheese! 😝 Least favorite food? As a child it was peas, but that was because I had never had fresh ones!

With clever marketing and the lure of convenience, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) now dominate our diets. Worryingly, many Australians are unwittingly eating their way to chronic ill-health by choosing ultra-processed foods that are often wrongly marketed as healthy. The The Australian Academy of Science's decadal plan for the science of nutrition cites increased nutrition literacy as a key strategy to reduce the burden of chronic disease. Learn more about this issue and a new project investigating UPFs by Deakin University Research Fellow, Dr Priscila Machado: https://lnkd.in/gRvchakU
