When budgets are being constrained, should companies shrink back with cost saving initiatives or focus on innovation? I read an article earlier this week in Information Age about the ACS (Australian Computer Society) Tech Summit which referenced the panel event I was on. The key message was that amid tightening IT budgets, innovation must remain a priority. Sarah-Jane Peterschlingmann emphasised the necessity of allocating funds for innovation, even in challenging economic climates. She stressed that focusing solely on operational delivery at the expense of innovation could hinder long-term growth. Paul Gampe echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of dedicating time and resources to innovation, rather than solely focusing on cost-cutting measures. The panel also delved into the significance of AI training for tech workers. Tim Coventry, CBAP®discussed the need to train employees to utilise AI effectively, not merely replace human roles with automation. I stressed the importance of investing in internships and graduate roles to foster fresh perspectives and cultivate a culture that values creativity, diversity and collaboration. I really enjoyed this panel. Another takeaway was for businesses to consider the real costs (financial, productivity, and otherwise) of poor retention as a result of cost-saving decisions, and whether the perceived savings are actually savings at all.
