The Fluidity of Being: Preparing Future Generations for a World of Perpetual Change The burgeoning field of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics promises a future brimming with automation. While this raises concerns about job displacement, it also presents a unique opportunity to redefine the very nature of work. This essay proposes a controversial yet philosophically sound approach to education that prioritises cultivating #emotional intelligence (EQ) and psychological resilience as the cornerstones of future employment. The Obsolescence of Obsolete Skills: Traditional education focuses on imparting a rigid skillset that risks becoming obsolete as AI and automation reshape the job market. Teaching students how to code or operate machinery may provide short-term utility, but it fails to equip them for a future characterised by rapid technological advancements. The Rise of the Emotional Machine: While AI excels at processing data and completing tasks, it struggles with the nuances of human interaction – the realm of emotion, empathy, and creativity. These are precisely the skills that will become increasingly valuable in the new world of #work. The Fluidity of Being: The ability to adapt and learn will be paramount in a future defined by constant change. We must move beyond a static concept of "self" towards a more fluid and evolving identity. This necessitates focusing on psychological resilience – navigating #change, overcoming setbacks, and maintaining a sense of well-being in uncertainty. The Power of Emotional Intelligence: EQ encompasses self-awareness, social awareness, #relationship management, and decision-making. Future jobs will require motivating others, fostering collaboration, and navigating complex interpersonal dynamics – all areas where EQ reigns supreme. A Controversial Approach: This proposed shift in educational focus is undeniably controversial. Critics may argue that neglecting core subjects like math and science stifles #intellectual development. However, these skills can be learned throughout life. Equipping future generations with the foundational ability to learn, adapt, and navigate the complexities of human interaction will serve them far better in a rapidly evolving world. The Ever-Evolving Curriculum: The ideal educational model would not be fixed but rather a living entity constantly adapting to meet the demands of the ever-shifting job market. This requires collaboration between educators, futurists, and industry leaders to anticipate future needs and tailor curriculum accordingly. Conclusion: The #future of #work demands a new paradigm. While AI and automation may revolutionise the job market, they will inevitably create new opportunities. By equipping future generations with the foundational pillars of emotional intelligence and psychological resilience, we prepare them to thrive in a world of perpetual change, not just as workers but as adaptable and emotionally intelligent human beings.

Recently I have found out just how fast the world of work is evolving. With machines and AI becoming more and more commonplace employers are really looking for only the best of the best to hire. Because of this it has become more important than ever that schools are able to teach the skills necessary for the students to succeed in the workplace but it's just as important that students have an idea of what developing these skills look like and why they're important to have. Starting off, integrating certification programs into the assessment process can significantly boost students' learning outcomes as well as their career advancement via providing a clear list of credentials needed for the future. Having all the required credentials for the job you want to go into is very important. A report by the Cengage Group found that 39 percent of employers believe that workplace skills and trAIning credentials are the most important aspect to consider when hiring new employees. Alongside this, it is imperative to ensure students have familiarity and understanding of advancing tools and technologies used in the workplace. As I covered in my previous post it is very important for students going into the job market to have strong technology skills due to how many jobs now use some form of automaton or AI. With this knowledge institutions must keep an eye on how tools disrupt and reshape industry roles in order to ensure students develop an effective understanding of these technologies. These are just a few of the important things colleges can do in order to prepare students for the workplace. How Students Can AI-Proof Thier Careers The current generation of students is facing a challenge that those who came before never had to worry about: They’ll be competing with AI for jobs By James R. (Bob) Hagerty at The Wall Street Journal In a rapidly evolving job market influenced by artificial intelligence, students can take proactive steps to safeguard their careers. Here are key strategies to consider: Enhance Human Skills : Focus on developing communication, teamwork, and emotional intelligence (EQ). These skills are vital in navigating workplace dynamics, as AI lacks the ability to mediate interpersonal relationships or handle complex social interactions. Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic ManpowerGroup Diversify Your Skill Set : Rather than honing in on a single specialty, cultivate a broad portfolio of skills. This might involve pursuing minors, double majors, or a mix of electives that combine technical abilities with business acumen. This approach increases your adaptability and potential job opportunities. Joseph Aoun Northeastern University Manage Complex Projects : Engage in projects that require organization, planning, and execution. Capstone projects or hands-on initiatives can showcase your ability to manage complexity and deliver results, which are crucial in a workforce where AI handles more routine tasks. John Behrens University of Notre Dame Embrace Adaptability : Be open to new experiences, whether through study abroad programs or unconventional courses. Developing a flexible mindset will help you navigate unpredictable career paths shaped by technological advancements. Anna Esaki-Smith author of “Make College Your Superpower.” Be a Moderate Misfit : Embrace a mindset of innovation and improvement. Seek environments where you can challenge the status quo while still collaborating effectively with others. This balance can foster creativity and fresh ideas in the workplace. Develop Your Unique Voice : In a world where AI can replicate average responses, individuals need to cultivate their distinct perspectives and creativity. Engaging in activities that encourage personal expression will help you stand out in a competitive job market. By actively pursuing these strategies, students can better position themselves for success in a future where AI plays a significant role in the workplace.

We need to evolve together with AI. Think of the word “AI Assisted” or “AI Assistant”or “co-pilot”, then we will feel better and understand that using AI as the Tool to help us in performing our work more efficiently. Humans must continue to advance (not stopping or not slowing down) in our learnings and do the things that AI Robotics can’t do. In the futuristic world, even if the day comes for the intelligent robots to co-exists with human beings, it should be viewed with positivity because we needed them as well. Think of all the things that Robots can accomplish which human beings are having the limitations. AI Robotics is no doubt the 5th Industrial Revolution, which we all have to embrace and adapt to the changes.

“By the time I graduate, AI is going to be way better than humans at engineering, and everything! What’s even the point of getting this degree if the jobs will all be automated away?” 😟 These are the chilling words of a 19-year-old engineering student who, just months into his degree, is already questioning if his future is being stolen by AI. And honestly? He’s not wrong! The article I just read from The Guardian tries to soothe us with talks of a "Zen mindset" and how AI will create as many jobs as it destroys. But let’s be real here - this is more than just about coping strategies and being "flexible"! We’re talking about millions of jobs at risk, and not everyone has the luxury to reskill overnight. Yes, emotional intelligence and adaptability are crucial, but let's not pretend that a positive attitude will magically solve the massive upheaval that AI is causing. The truth is, not everyone is going to find a shiny new job in this "AI utopia" we keep hearing about. Income inequality is already skyrocketing, and automation is set to make it worse. 📣 We need to stop sugarcoating the situation! It’s time for serious conversations about how we can demand real change from our leaders and institutions - whether it’s pushing for better access to education, advocating for universal basic income, or insisting on corporate responsibility as AI rolls out. The future isn't just coming - it's already here. And if we don't wake up and start planning for it, we're all at risk of being left behind. 💥 #AI #FutureOfWork #CareerAnxiety

Lindsay Rosenthal recently asked me what skills graduates will need. I boiled it down to 2: 1️⃣ Approaching Ambiguity → Think about what our students are being told. → Some are being told that jobs will change a lot soon. → They're also being told that maybe AI eliminates jobs. → We need to be preparing for multiple futures. 2️⃣ Slowing Down → Many of our students are told to do things faster and faster. → Education is for slowing down to appreciate the world around us. → This is the behavior change that underlies critical thinking and analysis. So much of what our graduates need emanates from these two skills. And we need to teach them as behavior changes. We need to provide safe spaces for students to practice them. To try them out. To fail and fall. And if we encourage them enough, they become behaviors that make life richer, regardless of what AI does.

NEXT-GEN JOBS: WHAT SHOULD KIDS BE STUDYING THESE DAYS? Zuck is dropping some good truth bombs these days, this 50-second clip recently caught my attention, crystallizing a truth about the future of work that's both exciting and terrifying. Historically, we've had time to adapt. The Industrial Revolution unfolded over decades, allowing generations to adjust. Even the Computer Revolution gave us a 10-15-year heads-up before it fundamentally altered the job market. But the AI Revolution? It's different. It's moving at lightning speed, changing our world at an unimaginable pace. As a tech-savvy professional, I pride myself on staying ahead of the curve. Yet even I couldn't foresee how dramatically AI would reshape our landscape in just the past 2-3 years. The next generation won't have the luxury of time to adapt, and our education systems are too slow to keep up. So, how do we prepare our children for a future that's arriving faster than we can comprehend? The answer lies not in chasing specific skills but building character and attitude. We need to focus on nurturing: 1. Unshakeable value system 2. Adaptability in the face of constant, rapid change 3. Critical thinking to navigate increasing complexity 4. The mindset of a builder and innovator We should not just educate for skills anymore; we should prepare them for an unimaginable, fast-approaching future. Our mission should be to forge a foundation so robust, so versatile, that they can withstand and flourish in any scenario. In this rapidly changing world, what do you think is crucial for next-gen's future?
