In March 2022, the Commonwealth Government and nbn® Australia announced a $750 million co-investment commitment to upgrade nbn’s Fixed Wireless and Satellite networks to help meet the growing needs of homes and businesses in regional Australia. This is enabling nbn to upgrade its Fixed Wireless network using state of the art 4G and 5G technologies which is on track for completion in December 2024. To ensure nbn continues to progress our efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its network, we have installed Ericsson’s innovative equipment with Microsleep Tx software on 2,400 Fixed Wireless towers which services rural and regional communities across Australia. In line with our commitment to reduce annual energy use by 25 GWh per annum by December 2025, nbn is reducing power consumption by five per cent across its Fixed Wireless network which is the equivalent of powering 200 Australian homes.   Our national fibre upgrade program is central to our plan to enable long-term reductions in network power demand and improve customer experience. nbn is on track to enable over 10 million premises – or up to 90 per cent of the Fixed Line network – to access close to Gigabit speeds by the end of 2025.   Read more https://lnkd.in/gDnU8keG

Nokia announced that Chorus, New Zealand's largest open-access internet infrastructure company, and 2Degrees, the country’s leading retail service provider, have activated its 25G PON solution in a live commercial network. New Zealand Cherry Corp will become the first customer to benefit from 25G PON, leveraging its capacity, latency, and reliability to revolutionize its farming methods. High-speed connectivity is driving a new wave of advanced Industry 4.0 and smart farming applications. Reece van der Velden, General Manager at Cherry Corp, emphasized the importance of this connectivity, stating: “Everything we do is captured electronically, which means we use a tremendous amount of data. Fiber enables reliable, high-speed, low-latency connectivity for real-time processing. We are transitioning from on-premises services to cloud AI-based processing to enhance productivity, reduce cost, and become more dynamic. This transformation requires streaming 400,000 high-definition photos per hour to the cloud for data processing and sending feedback in real time. Therefore, low latency and high upstream speed to the cloud are key. Alex Bladenis and Sri Amirthalingam from Telstra kicked off the 3GPP Plenary meetings in Melbourne today - BTW great local intro. Sri talked about the need for 3GPP in 5G Advanced to address efficiency in utilizing disparate spectrum assets (i.e. more bits/sec/Hz), power efficiency while maintaining the customer experience, and how operators can monetize the 3.5x data growth. The ability of 3GPP to embrace the developer community - especially in specialized features utilizing AI/ML and how do we integrate Open RAN better. Telstra is looking ahead to 6G with the inherent ability to provide ubiquitous coverage from NTN and other spectrum and technologies is key for a country like Australia. Looking at the spectrum issues utilizing 6 GHz for capacity and not forgetting low band FDD spectrum assets is something that must be considered for any 6G proposal.
