ADHD – What I have learnt? As we come to the end of ADHD awareness month, I thought it would be appropriate to share a little about my awareness of ADHD. Unless you have ADHD yourself or someone you are close to does, it can be hard to understand that it’s a mercurial condition which shows up differently for all. It ebbs and flows bringing wonderful highs and scary lows. Earlier this year, I qualified as an ADHD coach with the amazing Leanne Maskell at ADHD works. In my group of 16, I was one of only two ‘neurotypical’ delegates. As well as learning some fabulous tools to help ADHDers, I came away 1) knowing what it felt like to be the different one – I was conscious that my brain was working differently to most of the others in the room 2) filled with hope. The sessions were noisy, passionate, purposeful and quite brilliant. Spending time with a room full of ADHDers was quite something - our conversations we insightful, inspiring and different. The creativity was visceral. I am so lucky to have learnt about ADHD and now know so much more about how to help ADHDers navigate the ebbs and flows. I hope that understanding more about ADHD will help me to help others. What are you doing to learn about others this year? Understanding ADHD: Beyond the "Superpower" Narrative As someone who has worked with many individuals with ADHD, I've seen firsthand how social media often portrays ADHD as a "superpower" or focuses solely on its unique strengths. While it's true that ADHD can bring amazing strengths and areas where individuals excel, it's important to acknowledge that this narrative can sometimes feel dismissive and lacking in understanding. Conversations I've had with clients often reveal frustration with this narrative. For many people with ADHD, the daily challenges are real and significant. Mood swings, impulsivity, and difficulty concentrating are common struggles that can impact their lives in profound ways. The "superpower" narrative, though well-intentioned, can sometimes minimize these experiences and make individuals feel misunderstood. However, recognizing the strengths that come with ADHD—such as creativity, hyperfocus, and problem-solving skills—can be comforting and motivating. It often takes a lot of personal work and self-development to always see it that way. Understanding and accepting both the challenges and strengths of ADHD is essential. It’s about finding a balance and supporting individuals in their journey, helping them to navigate the difficulties while celebrating their unique capabilities. If you or someone you know is navigating life with ADHD, I offer personalized support to help manage these challenges and harness strengths. Through one-on-one sessions, workshops, and tailored strategies, I aim to create a supportive environment for growth and wellbeing. #ADHDAwareness #MentalWellbeing #SupportAndUnderstanding #ADHDStrengths #BalancedNarrative

Challenging Myths: Focus & ADHD 💡📘 'You can't have ADHD, because you can focus.'. 🤯 How many of you have heard this? Again, and again and again? 🌟 A common misconception, time to set the record straight! ADHD isn't just about the inability to focus; period. It's much weirder than that. ⭐ I can read a 500 page book, much faster than I can read a 1-page. It's that something has to GRAB my attention, and then I can 'hyperfocus,' a state where individuals with ADHD can become intensely absorbed in tasks. 🔍 Hyperfocus: A Double-Edged Sword: Hyperfocus can be a gift and a curse. For some, it channels deep focus into exercise or passionate projects, forgetting to eat or sleep. But at other times, it's losing hours to binge-watching horror movies on the hunt for dopamine! 🧠 Understanding ADHD: According to world renowned Dr. Russell Barkley, ADHD should be renamed 'Intentional Deficit Disorder' instead of 'Attention Deficit Disorder'. 💬 Open Discussion: What other myths do you commonly dispel about ADHD and Neurodiversity to others? Checkout AbilityNet's lived experience sessions to learn more about Neurodiversity! #ADHD #Hyperfocus #ADHDAwareness #Neurodiversity #DispellingMyths

Top 10 Reasons Adults Seek ADHD Assessments: Do Any of These Sound Familiar? After a year focused on expanding my services to ADHD assessments and completing over 50 robust evaluations, I’ve witnessed something profound. People come to me feeling overwhelmed, drained, and desperate to understand why life feels harder than it should. Many are high achievers, smart and driven, yet feel as if they’re fighting an invisible battle. They tell me their frustrations and struggles—and their hope that understanding ADHD might unlock a path to the potential they’ve always sensed within themselves. Here are the 10 most common reasons adults seek ADHD assessments—some may surprise you: 1. Overwhelmed by Daily Tasks: Simple tasks can feel like mountains. They’re not lazy—they’re overwhelmed. 2. Starting or Completing Projects: Many feel paralyzed at the start of a task or lose motivation halfway through. 3. A Lifelong Feeling of ‘Underachieving’: Watching others move ahead while feeling stuck, like running on a treadmill. 4. Easily Distracted, Especially When Tasks Are Boring: Getting sidetracked, often losing hours to distractions. 5. Emotional Sensitivity and Rejection: ADHD can mean feeling deeply affected by criticism and conflict. 6. Racing Thoughts and Urgency to Act: A feeling that if they don’t act immediately, ideas will slip away. 7. Floating or Lack of Direction: Many feel “stuck,” unsure of their path, and struggling to set goals. 8. Sudden Insight After a Child’s Diagnosis: A child’s ADHD diagnosis reveals patterns they see in themselves 9. Difficulty with Routines and Consistency: Motivation fades quickly, impacting work, health, and daily routines. 10. Procrastination, Followed by Intense Guilt: The rollercoaster of putting things off, followed by guilt and frustration. What I’ve learned from working with these remarkable individuals is that understanding ADHD isn’t just about clarity—it’s about reclaiming possibility and creating lives they’re proud of. Any of these reasons sounds familiar to you? #ADHD #ADHDASSESSMENT #ADULTADHD #FocusandFlow #Executivecoaching
