Financial Services are for everyone. Except they can’t be, when a large section of society is excluded due to inaccessible products and services. Our new film series ‘Disability Inclusion Stories’ aims to help the fintech industry understand and unpack the issue of accessibility. To truly see it. To feel it. Each film tells the unique stories of lived experience, bringing to life day to day challenges in using products and services that were not designed with disability needs in mind. This series trailer was shown on Wednesday at the The Payments Association Pay360 awards, ahead of the event’s inaugural Disability Inclusion Award. As an industry we need to come together to address this pressing issue and take action to deliver inclusion for all. Our first film, ‘Facing Recognition: Amit’s story’ launched 2 weeks ago and ‘Seema’s story’, will be released later this month. Financial Services Should Be Accessible for Everyone! Imagine waking up in the morning, ready to start your day, only to be locked out of your banking app because facial recognition fails. It’s not just frustrating—it’s isolating. Every time I’m asked to enter specific letters from my password, I have to mentally spell it out and carefully count each letter. Some days, the process becomes so overwhelming that I just give up and avoid logging in for hours. This is a reality for many of us with facial disfigurements. Working on this with Project Nemo has been a true privilege. Sharing my experiences and shedding light on these daily challenges has been deeply meaningful to me. I'm incredibly grateful to Joanne Dewar and Kris Foster for inviting me to be a part of this project. I truly hope these videos spark real change in the financial industry. Financial services are for everyone. Are they, really? Not when the products and services are inaccessible. Huge chunk of society is excluded. People with disabilities. Isaac, president of Wheels and Wheelchairs, got an MBE from King Charles, even strutted his stuff at London Fashion Week. But can't even access his own finances. "Systems that weren't designed for someone like me." Some fintechs are better than others. But it should be the same across the board. Project Nemo. Kris and Joanne. The power duo. I am deeply moved after watching this video. It delivers such a powerful and necessary message. It reminds us that we all bear responsibility when we fail to build truly inclusive systems—systems that, knowingly or unknowingly, leave gaps and impact countless lives. We speak of inclusion, yet these gaps persist, and we must acknowledge that there's much more to be done. Over the last few months at Project Nemo we’ve been working on an exciting new initiative, and I’m so proud to share the launch of our new film series ‘Disability Inclusion Stories’. The series aims to shine a light on the stories of those living with disabilities. Stories that need to be heard. At Project Nemo our mission is to Accelerate Disability Inclusion in the Fintech industry. We’re focusing on Fintech both because it’s the industry we know, but also because it is a young, agile industry with an opportunity to get it right from the outset. Digital solutions have the power to increase access, but often inaccessibility is unconsciously being built in, just because disability needs are not considered, or not understood. Our ‘Disability Inclusion Stories’ films, and podcast series, aim to address this. Speaking to the industry over the last few months we’ve repeatedly heard “Disability is too hard to tackle. We don’t know where to start”. Our films bring to life different stories of disability, helping the industry to really understand the issue and the challenges faced in accessing and engaging with fintech products and services. Understanding is the first step towards driving real action and change, and ensuring Financial Services really are for everyone. We’ll be sharing more stories over the coming weeks and months. Ecommpay Embraces Project Nemo: Pioneering Inclusion in FinTech As the digital age progresses, FinTech and disability inclusion have increasingly become intertwined as the industry strives to create accessible and inclusive financial services for everyone. By leveraging innovative technology, FinTech Companies can break down barriers and provide tailored solutions that cater to people with disability. On that note, I’m excited to share that Ecommpay has announced that it will be supporting Project Nemo over the next 12 months. Ecommpay’s article ‘Econmmpay joins disability initiative, Project Nemo,’ shares that they have partnered with Project Nemo’s campaign to connect disability inclusion experts with FinTech decision-makers who wish to accelerate their disability inclusion journey. Led by industry champion Joanne Dewar, Project Nemo works with disability advocates and service providers to educate and enhance inclusivity in the FinTech industry. Ecommpay has announced that they are committed to addressing and solving accessibility challenges within FinTech and Payments by providing comprehensive support throughout the campaign. This includes raising awareness through joint marketing initiatives, content creation, design, and sponsoring events like Money20/20 Europe. In addition to Project Nemo, Ecommpay is looking to improve industry inclusion by collaborating with organisations and charities such as RNIB and European Women Payments Network (EWPN). International companies such as Ecommpay are adopting disability inclusion programs like Project Nemo, which sets a standard for the rest of the industry. It creates a culture that is welcoming and accepting of PWD, as well as breaking down social barriers PWD experience. Not only that, it provides customer services that are tailored for PWD, which in turn boosts company revenue and output. Every organisation needs to think about making sure their services are accessible for everyone. I've had the chance to have a quality in-person conversation with Isaac Harvey MBE and he's a true expert in his field. We had a number of things in common including us both appearing in London Fashion Week during our careers! As an ally to communities thriving through and living with disabilities, it's important that I continue to learn about different disabilities. Isaac has been an incredible source of awareness for me personally over the last few years. Disruption Theatre. An apt location at the #Pay360 Conference this week to talk disability inclusion in the #FinTech sector. A throwback to starting out with Purple Tuesday back in 2018. Trying to get the accessibility voice heard amongst so many other competing industry priorities. When disability struggled to even reach the nice to do list. Feeling like an outlier in a huge exhibition hall. The reality was the opposite. Constant stream of people not just paying a cursory visit to our stand but deeply engaged. Why are you here was always the first question. We rolled out all the key numbers. The compelling commercial reasons about the disability market. The talent that were simply being ignored. Some already embedded in their organisations but the disclosure button not ready to be pushed. And others wanting to be part of such a vibrant sector impatiently waiting for the sector to dismantle the physical and mental barriers firmly in place. Every person then told their personal story of disability. Themselves. And their hidden secret. Or a close relative who had a disability for which they have never discussed at work. Literally you could see the imaginary stop signs being blown to smithereens in front of our eyes. Need to buckle up for a very fast journey in the coming months. Why? The sector has pioneers. Joanne Dewar is the most connected person I have ever met. Kris Foster has the lived experience story. And there is a band of others all part of Project Nemo. If you are one of them please give us all a shout out. The Team is recruiting authentic allies in the bucket load. A real privilege to be joined on stage by Ben Agnew who leads The Payments Association and who publicly pledged his support. And action. Others will follow. Engaged with brilliant people like Benjamin David from #ThePaymentsAssociation who provided a platform to get the message out to CEO’s and C-Suite. People like Whitney Simon from Missive who gets it and will ensure others will as well. The hard yards of the last few years have crafted a powerful narrative for others to use and accelerate.
