Lots of programmes claim to help start-ups to scale. But how can you tell whether they actually do? The tricky bit is untangling causality and correlation. Just because a programme has a glittering alumni list doesn’t mean that it contributed to their growth - just that it's good at picking winners and tracking their success. We’ve found two ways to understand our real impact on the growth of the companies we support. 1️⃣ Ask the founders. We support 300+ scale-ups every year on our Grow London Global international accelerator. At the end of the 12 months, we ask them how much of their growth they attribute directly to our support. On that measure, every £1 of taxpayers’ money we spend generates about £95 of economic growth, as audited by Hatch. (For those not used to public sector ROI numbers, 95:1 is ... huge). 2️⃣ Compare the businesses supported to those that aren’t. We worked with ekosgen and Belmana Ltd to compare our historic cohorts to similar businesses that didn’t take part. On that measure, businesses that took part grew 12.5 - 15% more per year than those that didn’t in the 2 years after the programme. Other than pleasing my inner econometrician, this matters because our KPI is to grow the economy, creating great jobs in innovative companies. So we need to know what works and what doesn't.
