I recently had a call with a new supplier, expecting the usual focus on performance metrics and CPA. To my surprise, they emphasized their commitment to sustainability. It caught me off guard—while I was fixated on cost-per-acquisition, they highlighted the environmental impact of their services. Things I never thought about before: Every digital ad served involves a complex infrastructure of data centers, servers, and networks that consume significant amounts of energy. Studies suggest that DIGITAL ADVERTISING accounts for approximately 2-3% of global carbon emissions, which IS COMPARABLE TO THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY. A report from The Shift Project estimates that the digital sector's carbon footprint could reach up to 3.5% by 2025 if current trends continue. Programmatic advertising, my background, is even worse, and yet I have never heard about it. The energy consumption of programmatic platforms can produce up to 1.3 kg of CO2 emissions per 1,000 impressions. One hour of streaming video can generate even 0.6 kg of CO2 emissions, and with video ads becoming increasingly prevalent, the affect on the planet is more than significant. As digital advertising is often touted for its efficiency compared to traditional media, we must recognize that it is not without environmental costs. The convenience of instant reach comes with responsibilities that we need to address. Understanding these impacts is the first step toward creating a more sustainable future for digital marketing. It’s time we acknowledge that every click, every impression, and every campaign carries a weight that extends beyond mere metrics. #digitalmarketing #sustainablemarketing
