Aviation emissions that are dispersed into the Earth's atmosphere affect the climate and air pollution, with significant spatiotemporal variation due to diverse air traffic activities ✈ ♻ Imperial College London used Spire’s ADS-B historical flight trajectories and weather data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts to develop the Global Aviation emissions inventory based on ADS-B (GAIA). By accessing precise and real-time data on an aircraft’s position, velocity, and other critical flight parameters, our ADS-B data enabled them to accurately track and continuously monitor flights throughout their entire journey. 🌐 This wealth of data contributed to a more comprehensive assessment of an aircraft’s fuel burn and emissions, allowing for the identification of specific areas where emissions reduction and optimization can be achieved. 📖 Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3NddSVJ Roger Teoh Marc Stettler Lynnette Dray Marc Shapiro #Aviation #Emissions #Sustainability #GreenAviation

China just unveiled a speedy 2 cm long insect bot with legs. BHMbot weighs 1.76 g can achieve a running speed of 17.5 BL s−1 (Body Length per second). Power consumption of 1.77 W. There is still a way to go to mimic nature fully though: the maximum running speed of a Californian mite (Paratarsotomus macropalpis2) can be up to 192.4 BL s−1. Great to see BBC News reporting on our 2030 Sustainable Aviation Goals report. Goal 1 - Operation Blue Skies - calls on aviation leaders to establish ‘Living Labs’ by the end of 2025 to address uncertainties in #contrail avoidance, which could reduce the #climate impact of #aviation by up to 40%. Contrails act as a blanket 🛏 in our skies, typically covering around 1/1,000th of the Earth's 🌍 surface at any one time. Whilst each contrail only last hours ⌛ , they're constantly replaced by the exhausts of aircraft flying in sky. Whilst there's significant uncertainty (+/-70%), the rate at which the contrail blanket warms the planet (the Effective Radiative Forcing) is estimated to be 57 mW/m2 - that's the same warming rate as 32 billion tonnes of CO2 in the atmosphere ♨ (for context, roughly 12 months of emissions from all sectors combined). It's crucial that we urgently act to create Airspace-Scale Living Labs to have the capability to test, learn, and pivot whilst operating within a realistic airspace environment. 🔬 ✈ #NetZero #SustainableAviation #NonCO2 Whittle Laboratory Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) https://lnkd.in/e9XJSCzN

A sonic boom is a thunderous noise created when an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound (Mach 1), compressing air molecules into shock waves that merge and propagate outward. When these shock waves reach the ground, they are heard as a sonic boom, akin to an explosion. Factors influencing the boom's intensity include the aircraft’s altitude, speed, size, and shape. Higher altitudes typically yield less intense booms due to the shock waves traveling a greater distance before reaching the ground, while lower altitudes produce more powerful booms. The aircraft's design, especially its nose and body, affects the shock waves' characteristics. Sonic booms can cause structural damage and disrupt communities, leading to strict regulations on supersonic flight over land. Ongoing research aims to develop quieter supersonic aircraft to minimize noise pollution, potentially allowing broader use of supersonic travel. By : KGPS Nimnadi #sopa #sopaweeklypost #sopafacts
