It's pure hustle. 😌 No magic tricks, magic bullet, just a whole lot of passion and self believe while things can also be a bit isolating... 😜 Building from scratch takes time, especially when you're figuring out funding and dealing with red tape. It's not always smooth sailing, but those setbacks? They teach you a ton about yourself. And every small win is worth celebrating! 🍀 One thing to keep in mind: funding often sets the pace. You can't jump to Series A funding without meeting the requirements. Start with pre-seed funding, accelerators, grants, or even bootstrapping for small dreams. If you've got big dreams, consider a corporate structure from the get-go and sometimes this is even a requirement. It's great to dream big, but success often comes from a combination of vision, hard work, and a strategic approach to overcoming challenges and it comes with a price that you can not easily calculate before you start. This year, I feel it in every part of me—OXB is going to be bigger and better than ever, and I believe in this business with my whole heart. The biggest difference? My circle. I’ve chosen to surround myself with positive, supportive people—mostly fellow entrepreneurs. I’ve sought out mentors who get it. I never want to feel alone again. The truth is, none of us have to. We’re all in this together, way more alike than different. Hi I'm Isabella and I don't come from nothing... Are entrepreneurs born from scarcity or legacy? It's a common narrative: the scrappy entrepreneur, rising from adversity to conquer the world. But what if your story doesn't quite fit that mould? Today, over a coffee with Max Buchan (a mentor of mine), I reflected on his first ever question to me. He asked 'Where does your drive come from?' My initial response felt pretty rubbish in comparison to his journey. No dramatic backstory, no struggle from rags to riches. I am super grateful to have grown up in leafy Sussex surrounded by stability, comfort and went to a school that costs more per year than the average yearly salary in London - now knowing what that means I'm quite shocked at that 😳 Yet, rather bizarrely, I'm fuelled by a hunger for growth, driven by a legacy rather than adversity. My great-grandfather's rags-to-riches saga has been a red thread weaving through my childhood, igniting a curiosity and ambition in me. It's crazy to me that he built one of the largest service businesses in the UK starting from cleaning windows. No education. No cash. Had loads of kids (free labour), and learnt how to built a sick SaaS (before it was cool) business out of need - he couldn't pay the rent. Sure before now I've had my fair share of rollercoaster ups, downs, fundraises, and going to £0. But at the end of the day, after £0, I could always go home. Thats a huge privilege. I see founders like Jamie Laing of Candy Kittens (McVitie's) try to distance themselves from their family heritage. And on the reverse side - brothers Kit Gammell Mike Gammell founders of SURREAL & Days be super open about their background, they put it on a billboard, but got toasted by the public. The only answer I have for this is that the drive for entrepreneurship can stem from a genetic predisposition, as well as environment? It doesn't seem to be talked about much? Everyone on Linkedin is too busy posting about burnout and leadership for the 100th time 🙃 I can't help but think despite all the privileges, you are statistically more likely to become a super successful founder if you felt scarcity growing up. Entrepreneurs are creatures of scarcity. We thrive in the absence, the lack—the void. It's not the scarcity of resources but the scarcity of limitations on our imagination that propels us forward. So what is it founders are driven by? Nature or nurture.

Knowing at first hand how hard it is to set up a small business and get it off the ground, to manage the downs the ups, the set backs, the moments of triumph. I have been so impressed with the determination shown, the one step at a time approach, the attention to detail and the commitment to quality, the feel the fear, which at times can be overwhelming, and it do it anyway. Each achievement gives you confidence, each set back makes you doubt. You work harder than you ever thought possible, and then you work some more. Only years later do you look back and realise how far you have come, how things that once were impossible and terrifying, you now do with ease, without thinking, everyday. So design and development complete, playtesting undertaken, feedback analysed and refinements made, the game, Shat on a Cat (I said it was a cheeky name!) is on Kickstarter. A new entrepreneur takes his first big step into the world of business and the journey begins. Flipping 30 homes, I ventured into the world of apartment acquisitions, a rebound that felt like sweet redemption. But the rollercoaster didn’t stop there. At 28, the very partners I trusted, the ones I thought shared my vision, ripped me off, leaving me to pick up the pieces once more. Undeterred and seeking a fresh start, I moved to California, where I began to build an Airbnb business from the ground up. This wasn’t just a new business venture; it was a reinvention, a challenge to myself to rise from the ashes yet again. And rise I did, learning, growing, and expanding my horizons. Eight years into this California dream, I launched Freewyld—my true calling, the reason I believe every step of this journey was destined.
